The
Visit to this Sri Vaitheeswarar Temple at Nookampalayam, Perumbakkam was a Part
of the “Maha Vishnu and Shiva Temples Visit” - in the Perumbakkam area on 07th
April 2024. The temple is small in a vast area.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are…
The
temple faces east with an entrance from Southside. Kambathadi Vinayagar,
Dwajasthambam, Balipeedam, and Rishabam are in front of the temple. Stucco
images of Shiva and Parvati as Rishaba roodar along with Nalvar, Nataraja with Sivakami, Vinayagr, Am,bal Thayyal Nayaki are on the top of Parapet wall of the
mukha mandapam. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar
is on a square avudayar. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu,
Brahma and Durga.
In
Praharam Nagars with Vinayagar under a Peepal Tree, Navagrahas, Bairavar, and Chandikeswarar.
Ambal
is in a separate sannidhi facing South. Ambal is in standing posture with
abhaya varada hastam. In Ambal sannidhi koshtam Vaishnavi, Brahmi and
Rajarajeswari.
ARCHITECTURE
The
complete temple was constructed with bricks and cement concrete. This simple
temple consists of a sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and open mukha mandapam. The
sanctum sanctorum Vimanam is of eka tala with adhistanam, bhitti, prastaram,
greevam and a nagara sigaram. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, and Brahma are in the Greeva
koshtam.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
original temple may be 200 years old. The old temple stone parts are strewed on
the back side of the temple. The present temple might have been reconstructed in
recent years.
LEGENDS
It
is believed that worshipping Shiva at this temple will get relief from ailments. Hence this temple is considered equivalent to Vaitheeswarar Kovil,
of Mayiladuthurai District, and one of the Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam.

Apart
from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri,
Panguni Uthram festival with Thirukalyanam, Markazhi Month Saturdays, etc.

20.30 hrs.

TO REACH
The
temple is in Nookkampalayam a part of Perumbakkam, on the north side of
Perumbakkam Hill and the east side of Perumbakkam Lake. The temple is 7 KM from
Medavakkam Junction through Mambakkam - Sithalapakkam Road, 4 Km from
Medavakkam Junction through Perumbakkam – Nookampalayam Road, 10.5 KM from
Velachery and 13.5 KM from Tambaram Railway station.
The nearest railway station is Velachery.
