Padavetti Amman Temple / படவெட்டி அம்மன் கோயில், சித்தூர் / Chittoor, Salem District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Padavetti Amman Temple at Chittoor was a part of “Shiva, Vishnu, Amman Temples and Heritage sites from Komarapalayam to Edappadi Visit” – On 19th May 2024. Thanks to ல மா செல்வராசுone of my FB friends of Komarapalayam for taking me to all these places.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a newly constructed 7 tier Rajagopuram. Trishuls, Oonjal / swing, Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and vahana Simham are in front of the temple. A Male and female dwarapalaka and Dwarapalaki are at the entrance of ardha mandapam. In Sanctum sanctorum Padavetti Amman is in sitting posture with ashta bhujam, holding various weapons, like sword, bell, kapalam, Trishul etc. she keeps her left leg on the Demon.

HERO STONE / SATI STONE
16th to 17th century CE, Hero / sati stone is found in the praharam. The details are written in a separate post.  



ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The temple was built with stone from adhistanam to prastaram. The sanctum sanctorum is of rectangular in shape on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam and pattikai. The out side ground level is up to kumudam level and hence the jagathy is not visible. There is no koshtam provision. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam. The Vimanam is of salakara style with one tala and the sigaram is also salakara style with 3 kalasas. 




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple may be 400 to 500 years old and basically this temple is a Grama devata temple. The Dwarapalaka and Dwarapalaki images are unique in this temple and usually this arrangement can be seen only in ancient and old temples. 

LEGENDS
Since this temple is one of the Grama devata temple, a guarding deity of the Village. Devotees worships Amman to guard them from evil spirits, to get rid of pilli Suniyam, eval, deceases, etc.  

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Amavasya days, Fridays, and during annual festival days during Chithirai month. During annual festival Amman will be taken in procession through Chariot.

TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept opened between 06.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs and 16.00 hrs to 18.00 hrs.

The Temple at Chittoor is about a 500 Meters from Chittoor, Padavetti Amman Temple, 8 KM from Edappadi, 23 KM Sankagiri, and 47 KM from Erode.
Nearest Railway station is Sankagiri.
