On the same day, November 21, 1920, it was a ‘Bloody Sunday’ in Dublin,
Ireland, as Violence killed several Dozen.
On 21st November 1972, The New York Times reports GREECE'S
STUDENTS VOTE FOR LEADERS.
The Palayamkottai incident started on 19th November; two
professors, Mr. Srinivasan and another Professor of St. Xavier’s College, were
attacked and arrested by the Palayamkottai police. The reason for this attack
was when the Inspector’s son mocked a Girl, which was objected the by Prof.
Srinivasan. Almost all the college students of Tirunelveli district started a strike. On hearing, the students of St. Xavier’s College decided to make a
complaint to the District Collector on 21st November 1972. The students
were stopped at the Sulochana Mudaliar Bridge, and a lathi charge was ordered. In
the midst of Chaos and confusion, the Student Lourdunathan, who hailed from Salem, jumped into to Thamirabarani River and died. The students decided to take the
body to the college gate. When they approached the gate, the body was taken to
police custody. This news spreads like wildfire across the State. All the
college students joined in the protest.
In memory of Lourdunathan, more than a life-size statue was installed at
Palayamkottai South Bazar. It was learned that the students, after the
elections in the college, used to garland Lourdunathan’s Statue, as a respect to
the old student. The statue was unveiled by K Kamaraj.
