The
16-pillar Bharatwaj Maharishi mandapam is in front of the temple. The pillars
have the bas-reliefs of Donors and Vaishnava deities. The pillars are not in a
straight line but lean outwards, which may have occurred after the construction.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
It
is claimed that the temple was built by the Chozha king Karikala, but no proof is available to prove the same. But the present structure belongs to the 15th
to 17th century Vijayanagara period.
The
temple thirupani was carried, parivara sannidhis were constructed, and Ashta
bandha Maha Samprokshanam was conducted on 0th February 2001.
LEGENDS
As
per the legend, in a cowherd, one cow was pouring milk on an ant hill, in the Biruntharanyam (துளசி வனம்). On
inspection by the King’s officials, a swayambhu Krishna idol was unearthed.
Later, a temple was built by the Chozha King Karikala Chozha. Hence, the Moolavar
is called Kari Krishna Perumal.
POOJAS
AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular poojas as per Vaikanasa Agama, special poojas are conducted on Puratasi Saturdays,
Vaikunta Eakadai, Rama Navami, etc.
On
Chithirai (April–May), Sri Kari Krishna Perumal and Sri Agastheeswarar of
Ponneri are taken in procession and bless the devotees at one place. (It is
believed that Agasthiyar and Bharatwaja Maharishi requested Maha Vishnu and
Shiva for their darshan at one place). This symbolises the unity of Saivam and
Vaishnavam.
