Bhagwan Sri 1008 Mahavir Jinalaya, Kovilampoondi, Tiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Mahavir Jinalaya at Kovilampoondi  was a part of “Pallava period Shiva, Amman and Jain Temples Visit” in Tiruvannamalai and Ranipet Districts on 3^rd September 2023. Thanks to Mrs Radhabalan, of Kanchipuram for taking me to these temples.  This Temple on the south side bank of River Cheyyar.

கோவிலாம்பூண்டி ஜினிலயமானது நல்ல விசாலமான பரப்பளவில் 14ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் கட்டப்பட்டு, 1008 பகவான் மகாவீரர் மூலவராக  வீற்றிருக்கும் அழகிய ஜினாலயம்.  மேலப்பழந்தை ஆதிஸ்வரர் ஜினாலய உபாத்தியாயர் திருமிகு.தங்கராஜ் வாத்தியார் அவர்கள் அன்றாடம் ஜலாபிஷேகம் செய்து வருகிறார்கள். இரண்டாம் காட்சிப் பதிவில் உள்ளவாறு ஜினாலயத்தின் நான்கு புறமும் மதிர்சுவர்கள் பாதுகாப்பாக அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. மதிர்சுவரின் பிரதான நுழைவாயிலிலிருந்து ஜினாலய மண்டபம் சுமாராக 50மீட்டருக்கும் கூடுதலான பரப்பளவு விசாலமான இடைவெளியுடன் அமைந்துள்ளது.  முதல் காட்சிப் பதிவில் உள்ளவாறு நான்கு புறமும் திரளான மக்கள் ஜினாலயத்தை சுற்றி வந்து பகவானை வழிபடுவதற்கு ஏதுவாக அகலமான பரப்பளவினைக் கொண்டுள்ளது.  மதிற்சுவரின் உட்புறமாக வலது பக்கத்தில் சிராவக, சிராவகியர் தங்களது பாதங்களை சுத்தம் செய்துகொள்ள ஏதுவாக நீர் நிறைந்த கிணறும் அமைந்துள்ளது.  தீபாவளிப் பண்டிகை, புத்தாண்டு, பொங்கல், அட்சய திருதியை மற்றும் பகவான் மகாவீரர் ஜெயந்தி ஆகிய முக்கிய  சுப நாட்களில் திருவிழாக்கள் நடைபெறும்.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..

The Jinalaya is facing east with an entrance mandapa. Jain flag staff and balipeedam is after the entrance. Two Tirthankaras and a Yakshi are on the left side after the entrance.

Mahavir is in the sanctum in sitting posture. In the Ardha mandapa, two Parshvanath, Brahma Yaksha and an Yakshi are in the ardha mandapam niches.

ARCHITECTURE

The Jinalaya consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a open mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a upanam, pada bandha adhistanam. The Bhitti is with Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, palakai and vettu pothyal. The Prastaram consists of Valapi kapotam with nasi kudus. Madhalai is in the valapi. A tala is on the prastaram. Jain Tirthankara images are in tala and greeva koshtam. The Vimanam is of vesara style with 4 maha nasis of which two are missing. Both Ardhamandapam and Mukha mandapam are supported with Vrutha pillars and poomottu pothyals. 

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

The temple was constructed during 14^th Century and the same was reconstructed / renovated and mukha mandapam was extended during Vijayanagara period.

The temple has land in the same Village.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

One Kala pooja  is conducted by a Vathiyar from Melapazhandhai. Deepavali, Pongal, Akshaya Tritiya and Mahavir Jayanthy are celebrated in this temple.

The temple will be kept opened during morning Hours and a person lives in the same Village can arrange for opening of the temple for darshan.
