This
Sri Thirukaraieaswarar Temple at Peranamallur is one of the lesser-known Pallava period Shiva temples of the Tiruvannamalai
District. The Visit to this temple was a part of the “Pallava period Shiva, Amman, and Jain Temples Visit” in Tiruvannamalai
and Ranipet Districts on 3rd September 2023. Thanks to Mrs
Radhabalan, of Kanchipuram for taking me to these temples.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are…..
The
temple faces east with a 3 tier Rajagopuram on the South side. Balipeedam,
Dwajasthambam, and Rishabam are on the east side. The entrance to the ardha
mandapam is on the south side through a recently constructed open mandapam. Vinayagar and Murugan are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Utsavars are in the
antarala. Moolavar in the sanctum is believed to be of Swayambhu on a round avudayar.
In Kostam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.
Ambal is in a separate sannidhi in the ardha
mandapam. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam. Nalvar and Suryan
are in the ardha mandapam.
In the outer praharam Vinayagar, Maha Vishnu, Sri
Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas, Jyeshta Devi with
Manthan and Mandhi, Nagaras and Loose sculptures of Maha Vishnu, Vinayagar and
Durgai.

ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam/maha mandapam.
The sanctum sanctorum and Vimanam are in the form of Gajaprishta style. From
adhistanam to Prastaram the sanctum sanctorum was built with stone and Vimanam
above prastaram was built with Bricks. An eka tala Gajaprishta vimanam is on
the sanctum sanctorum. Shiva & Parvati, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and
Brahma are in the Greeva koshtam.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
The
original temple belongs to the Pallava period and may be as a Brick temple and the same
was reconstructed during the Vijayanagara period. Fragment inscriptions on stone slabs
with Rajendra Chozha-I’s period inscriptions starting with his meikeerthi, are found in this temple. The Adhistanam has the Vijayanagara period inscriptions. This means,
that during the Chozha period, the temple remained a brick Temple.
During
reconstructions, some pillars are used for the wall of the antarala (outside).
These inscriptions belong to the Chozha period. Also
the Jyeshta Devi, Vinayagar, and Loose sculptures of Durga and Vinayagar belong to the Pallava
period. MahaVishnu’s sculpture ( Koshtam ) was reworked and abandoned.
Rajendra Chozha-I's period fragment inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp for the same 102 Sheep / Goat was gifted to this temple.

Ashta Bandhana Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 16th July 2014.
Rajagopuram Thirupani was done at a cost of Rs. 8,50,000 and the donars are C Ramakrishnan and R. Umasankari.
LEGENDS
It
is believed that this Temple was constructed 1500 years before by the Chozha
King Kochanganan / Ko Chengat Chozhan.

CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from Regular Poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, and Arudra Darshan.
This
temple has the Kailaya Vathiya Troupe, which plays during celebrations.
