While searching the inscriptions of Erode District
Temples, and a Hero stone I visited this temple on 24th July
2024. Incidentally, this temple is very near to my Kula Deivam Sri Veeramathi
Amman temple, near Nambiyur, and visited both temples.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces west with a Kongu-style
Deepasthambam, balipeedam, and Rishabam. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the
sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar in the sanctum sanctorum is on an elevated level.
In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.
In praharam Vinayagar, Sri Senthil Andavar, A Hero
Stone ( Pulikuthi ), Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas ( with their consorts ),
Bairavar, Suriyan, Chandran, Pazhani Dhandayuthapani and Sri Kasi Viswanathar Shiva Lingam with
Rishabam and Spata kannis.
Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing west like
Moolavar. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya Varda hastam. Ambal’s
various forms are in the koshtam.
Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar sannidhi is in between
Shiva and Ambal sannidhis ( Somaskandar ).
ARCHITECTURE
The temple was reconstructed in the 20th century and
no architectural style followed. The temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum,
ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. The Vimanam is of one tala, a greevam, and a
nagara sigaram. The temple was constructed with stone from adhistanam to
prastaram with stone and the superstructure was built with brick. Shiva,
Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the tala and greeva koshtams. Mukha
mandapam was constructed with cement concrete during renovations/reconstruction.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The Original temple belongs to the Kongu Pandya period and
the same was reconstructed in the 20th century. ( Readers are advised,
not to trace the inscriptions, in the temple, since they were destroyed during
renovations ). As per the inscriptions, this place was called Nambiperur in
Vadaparisara Nadu. Shiva was called Tantōnrīśvaramudaiyār.
Vira-Pandyadeva’s 11th reign year (1276 CE
), an incomplete inscription on the South wall of the Tantonriśvara temple, records
a gift of a sandhyā lamp to the god Tantōnrīśvaramudaiyār by a certain person
(name lost), a Vellalan Menmani of Nambipērür in [......]-nādu.
( The King’s
name starting is damaged )……Pandyadēva’s 11th reign year, Aippaśi
month incomplete inscription on the South wall of the Tantonriśvara temple, records
a gift of the lamp to the god Tantōnrīśvaramudaiyār, by a certain Kamindan a
Vellalan Kalañjipari of Nambipērür in Vadapariśāra-nādu.
Vīra-Pandyadeva’s 11th reign year ( 1276 CE
), damaged & incomplete inscription on the South wall of the Tantonriśvara
temple, records a gift of two sandhyā lamps and probably money to provide oil
for them, to the god Täntönrīśvaramudaiyar by a certain Mukkan Andan, a Vellala
of Nambipërür in Vadapariśāra-nādu. A Siva-brahmana named Andan Sella-batten
alias Tiruchchirrambala-Nambi of Bharadrajagotra and another (name lost) who
had rights (of worship) in the temple seem to have accepted the gift.
Vira-Pandya Dēva’s 11th Aippaśi month 1276 CE
damaged and incomplete inscription on the East wall of the same temple left of
entrance, records a gift of a sandhyā lamp to the god of Tantonrisvaramudaiyar by a certain Dēvan
Irājarājan a Vellalan Sõla of Nambipërür in Vadaparisara-nādu. The
Sivabrahmanas figure in the above inscription is mentioned in this inscription.
Vira-Pandyadeva’s 14th reign year (1279 CE
), an inscription on the North wall of the same temple, records a gift of a
sandhyā lamp and a sum of 10 panam to provide oil for it, to the deity
Tantōnrīśvaramudaiyār of Nambipërür by the wife of the Brahmaņa Pūman Söman of
Kāśuva (Kāśyapa)-gōtra belonging to Pattāli in Kāngaiya-nādu. The
temple-right-owning Brahmanas Andân Sella-batten alias Tiruchchirrambala-Nambi
of Bharadvāja-gōtra and Alvän Vañjagarkāyan alias Vañjanāyaka-batten received
the gifts and agreed to do the service.
(The starting
portion of the inscription is damaged ) .....[Pā]ndyadeva’s 11th
reign year (1273 CE ) (Virapāndya), a
damaged on some places inscription, on the North wall of the same Temple, records
a gift of a sandhyā lamp and a sum of 10 panam for (providing oil for) it, to
the same deity by a certain Singakaramindan Devan (second name lost), a
Vellälan Kalañjaya of Nambipërür in Vadapariśāra-nādu. The gift was received by
the same Sivabrāhmaņas who figure in the above inscription also in this
inscription.
Two broken pieces of a slab set up in Pudür, a hamlet
of Nambiyür. Mahamandalēśvara Vira-Nañjanna-udaiyār: Isvara, Chittirai- 1517 CE,
April (?). This fragmentary inscription now contains only the name of the ruler
and a few details of the date given above.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 17th
March 2006. Now the temple is in Palalayam and preparing for Kumbhabhisekam in
2024.
LEGENDS
It is believed that the Shiva Lingam was, came from the
earth as Swayambhu, hence Shiva is called Thanthondreeswarar.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are
conducted on Pradosham, Sashti, Kiruthigai, Theipirai Ashtami, Maha Shivaratri,
etc.
TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to 10.30
hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

This temple is about a KM from the Nambiyur bus stop.
This place Nambiyur is on the way to Avinashi from Gobichettipalayam.
The temple is 21 KM from Gobichettipalayam, 31 KM from
Avinashi, 51 KM from Erode, and 81 KM from Coimbatore. Nearest Railway station
is Erode
