இளையனார்வேலூர் என்னும் பதிப்பெயர் இயம்பவும் பூந்தளையவிழ் மலர் சூழ் வாவித் தடாகமும் செழித்து செந்நெல் விளையவும் வசித்தோர் கண்டோர் மேவினோர் வினைகள் யாவும் களையவும் இளையோன் எண்ணிக் கருணை கொண்டிருந்தான்.

The visit to this Balasubramanya Swamy Temple, Ilayanar Velur, was not a part of the Shiva, Vishnu, and Amman Temples Visit on the banks of the river Cheyyar / Palar, scheduled on 15th March 2020. After Thirumalai Swamy Temple’s visit, on the way to Chennai, we came across this place and found the temple was open. Ilayanar Velur is on the banks of the river Cheyyar, a tributary of the river Palar. It is claimed that the 15th-century Arunagirinathar has sung a hymn on Murugan of this temple. Lord Muruga, as a young boy, destroyed Demons through Vel – hence this place is called Ilayanar + Vel, which has been corrupted as Ilayanar Velur.

Some of the salient features of this temple are...

The temple faces east with a 5-tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Elephant vahana are after the Rajagopuram. Stucco images of Sri Subramanya Swamy’s Leela are on the three sides of mukha mandapa. A Vinayagar and stucco Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of th artha mandapa. Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Jeeva Samadhi of (Gnana Siddhar) Sri Swamy Natha Siddhar (அருள்மிகு தெய்வீக ஞானசித்தர் சுவாமிநாதசுவாமி அருள்பீடம் இளையனார் வேலூர்) with Vinayagar & Chandran (an ardent devotee of Sri Subramanya Swamy who attained jeeva Samadhi in this temple. Hence 1^st Naivedyam is offered to this Siddhar before Sri Subramanya Swamy. On the Aipasi month pournami day, Annabhishekam will be done grandly. Oonjal and Vasantha mandapam are in the outer praharam. Moolavar Sri Murugan, as Balasubramanya Swamy, is about 6 feet with Vel, Cock flag, and Peacock at his feet. The urchavar is in abhaya & Varada hastam.

The consort of Lord Muruga is the combination of Sri Valli and Devasena, called Gajavalli. The sannidhi is on the left side of the Moolavar sannidhi. In the inner prakaram, Ekambaranathar, Ekam Perundandam Udayar, Maha Tripura Sundari, Kasi Viswanathar Santhana Ganapathi, Sumithirai Chandikeswarar, and the Vel on the North west corner.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS.

Since the 15^th century, Arunagiri Nathar has sung hymns on Lord Subramanyar of this temple; the temple might have existed before the 15^th Century and may belong 14^th to 15^th Century. Recent period inscriptions are found inside the temple.

LEGENDS

The legend of Sri Prathigengeeswarar Temple of Neyyadupakkam is also applicable to this temple with little change. As per the Legend Kashyapa Maharishi did penance on Lord Shiva to destroy the demons Malayan and Magaran, who gave frequent trouble for his penance. Lord Shiva came out of Pathala Lok and gave darshan to Kashyapa Maharishi. Lord Shiva gave the Vel/spear to Lord Muruga to destroy the demons. Murugan threw the Vel at the demons and destroyed them. The temple is located where the vel killed the demons and rested on the ground. Hence, it is said that the depth of the Vel, below the ground, is not known to anybody.

The devotees worship Lord Subramanya Swamy for Child boon, to get relief from debt, loss in business, to get relief from enemies, etc. As a part of thanksgiving, devotees used to bring Pal Kavadi, Paneer Kavadi, and Pushpa Pallakku.

CELEBRATIONS:

Chithirai Thiruvizha with car/chariot procession (109^th Bramotsavam was conducted in 2016), Theppotsavam in January, Laksharchana in Masi month, Vaikasi Vasantha Urchavam, Avani Pavithra Urchavam, Puratasi Gajavalli Urchavam, Panguni Uthiram, Ipasi Kantha Sasti, are celebrated grandly.

This temple is about 17 km from Walajabad, 25 km from Kanchipuram, 30 km from Chengalpattu Junction, and 77 km from Chennai.
