15th March 2010.
The visit to this Saraswati & Vazhi Thunai Vinayagar ( வழித்துணை வினாயகர் ) temples and the Traveler's mandapa was not a part of our Shiva, Vishnu and Amman Temples Visit on the banks of river Palar, scheduled on 15th March 2020. On the way to Villivalam, happened to see these Temples, adjacent to an 18th Century Traveler's resting mandapa /வழிப்போக்கர் மண்டபம். Visited
the temples and mandapa also.
Presiding Deity: Sri Saraswati
There are only a few temples in India, exclusively dedicated to
Saraswati, the goddess of Education. This is a small temple built on the main
road from Walajabad to Kanchipuram. The temple pond ( சரஸ்வதி குளம்- பிசானங்குளம் ) is
on the right side of the temple. Another uniqueness of this temple is the idols of
Kambar the great poet, who had written the epic Ramayana in Tamil, and his wife
Nikirthavalli.
The temple faces
South with a Single-tier Rajagopuram. The Stucco images are on the Rajagopuram, Mukha mandapam top, and Vimana. Sri Saraswati is in a sitting posture holding a Veena. The idols of Kambar and his wife are in the ardha mandapa in standing posture with both hands in Anjali hasta (Hope both have been installed in recent years).
The sanctum sanctorum
consists of a sanctum, an artha mandapam, and an open mukha mandapam. An ekathala
Vesara Vimana with a Stucco image of Saraswati is on the sanctum. Considering the architecture, the temple
maybe 200 to 300 years old and may be built along with the Traveler's resting
mandapa /வழிப்போக்கர் மண்டபம்
This
temple is built between the Traveler's resting mandapa and Saraswati
Temple. This temple is also facing south
with a single-tier Rajagopuram. The sanctum sanctorum also consists of a sanctum
and an open mukha mandapam. Hope this temple might have been named considering the name of Traveler's resting Mandapa/வழிப்போக்கர் மண்டபம்.
HOW TO REACH:
The
temples are at the Thangi bus stop on the Walajabad to Kanchipuram Main road.
