HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Many years before, the locals found a stone temple with 16 fluted facets as Dhara Linga in the midst of thorny bushes & trees. Under the guidance of Maha Periyava, locals cleared bushes around the temple and started worship as East Kailasanathar, since there are already 3 Kailasanathar temples on the banks of Sevilimedu lake.

The Original temple was built during the Pallava period, and later the temple was renovated by the Chozhas. The temple walls and adhistanam have the Pallava and Chozha period inscriptions.

LEGEND:
As per the legend, in the process of distribution of “Amrita” churned from the milk ocean to the Devas, the Demon Swarnabanu took the form of a Deva standing between Suryan and Chandran, received and drank. When this was complained about by Suryan and Chandran, Vishnu chopped the head of Swarna Banu. Since the demon drank the Amirth, the head transformed into a snake head, and the body transformed into a Snake tail. To get rid of this, they came to earth, created a pond, and worshiped lord Shiva. Pleased by their devotion, Lord Shiva gave them the position of Raghu and Kethu. Hence, this temple is called Rahu, Ketu, and also a pithru dosha Nivarthi Sthalam.
