15th March
2020.
The visit to this Prathigengeeswarar
Temple, at Neyyadupakkam, was a part of the Shiva, Vishnu, and Amman Temples Visit on
the banks of the river Palar, scheduled on 15th March 2020. Neyyadupakkam is on the south side of the Cheyyar River, a tributary of the Palar River. There are two Chozha-period Shiva temples in this village, one on the east and the other on the west side. After the Sri Marutheeswarar
Temple’s visit on the east side, our next destination was the Shiva temple
on the west side of the village. The Madras University Vice Chancellor N.
D. Sundaravadivelu (1912 – 1993), who was responsible for the “educational
revolution” in Tamil Nadu under the leadership of then Chief Minister K Kamaraj,
belongs to this place, Neyyadupakkam. Maha Periyava of Kanchi Mutt
also stayed at this temple for a whole night during his yatra.

HISTORY
& INSCRIPTION
As per the
inscriptions, during the Chozha period, this place was under Jayankonda
Chozhamandalathu Kaliyur Kottaththu Thodu Paluvur Nattu Neyyatrupakkam (நெய்யாற்றுப்பாக்கம்). Lord
Shiva was called Piruthiyangavudayar (பிருதியங்காவுடையார்). The middle Chozha period inscription is on the Adhistanam, which is not readable.
The inscription on the entrance door jamb/ side pillar has the Chozha King Veera Rajendran's (1063 – 1070 CE) 3rd-year rule inscriptions. This inscription records the gift towards burning of Two Sandhi lamps in Natarajar Sannadhi (இளம்பிறைசூடி கூத்தர்) & Vinayagar - அரிசிபிள்ளை (ஒளிவளர் விளக்கு - perpetual lamp) by Chengundran kizhan Nelvai Nambi Nayakar of the same Village.
Kumbhabhishekam was
performed in 1994 and 2012 after repair and renovation works.
Virarajendra period inscriptions on the side pillars of the entrance
Chozha period inscriptions on the Kumudam are faintly visible
LEGEND:
As per the legend, Kashyapa
Maharishi did penance on Lord Shiva at this place to destroy the demons Malayan
and Magaran. Lord Shiva came out of Pathala Lok and gave darshan to Kashyapa
Maharishi. Lord Muruga destroyed both demons through his Vel. To signify this event, a scar can be seen on the Moolavar.
