Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram Shiva Temples Visit- 6

21^st February 2020.

The visit to this Sri Veda Vanneeswarar, at Sadavaram, was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. The temple is on the south side of Punniya Koteeswarar temple and on the Punniya Koteeswarar Koil St. (on the banks of the river Vegavathi- Now as a sewerage channel ?).

The 18th-century Sivagnana Swamigal had written this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchi Puranam. (Also doubt that the following is sthala purana may not be directly applicable to this temple, but the story may be applied to all Vanneeswarar Temples). The same is reproduced as given below...

வன்னீச வரலாறு

மூதழற் கடவுள் தன்னுடன் பிறந்த முன்னவர்

மும்மையர் உள்ளார்

பேதுறா மதுகை மூவரும் விண்ணோர் பெறுமவி

சுமக்கலாற் றாது

மேதகும் ஆவி இறந்தனர் அதனை விரிதழற்

பண்ணவன் நோக்கி

யாதினிப் புரிவல் எனக்குமிவ் விடும்பை யெய்துமே

யென்றுள மழுங்கி

மகோததி யனைய ஐயரம் பையர்தம் (மகோததி – பெரிய கடல்)

வாவியி னுள்ளுறக் கரந்து

சகோதரர் தம்மை இழந்தவன் றனக்குச்

சகோதரம் நீதடம் புனேல

உகாதெனைப் புரத்தி யென்றுரைத் தங்கண்

உறைந்தனன் அன்றுதொட் டளிகள்

முகேரனப் பாயும் மலர்த்தடம் அதற்கு

மொழிபெயர் சகோதர தீர்த்தம்.

எரிதழற் புத்தேள் அன்னணம் உறைய இமையவர்

எங்கணுந் துருவிப்

பெரிதிளைப் பெய்தி யாண்டுவந் துறலும் பெருந்தடத்

துறையுமீன் அவர்க்குத்

தெரிதர வியம்பிற் றாகவெங் கனலோன் செயிர்த்தடைக்

கலம்புகுந் தேனைப்

பரிவுறக் காட்டிக் கொடுத்தநீர் தூண்டிற் படுகொலை

யுறுகெனச் சபித்து

* மீன்கள் அக்கினி தேவனைத் தங்களுக்குக் காட்டினைமயால்

தேவர்கள் அவற்றிற்கு இமையாநாட்டம் அளித்தனர் என்ப.

மின்னெ வெளிக்கொண் டிரந்துநின் றைழக்கும்

விண்ணவர் தங்களை நோக்கி

முன்னுறப் போமின் வருவெலன் றியம்பி முளரிநீர்த்

தடமதன் கரையின்

மன்னுவன் னீச வள்ளலை யிருத்தி மரபுளி

யருச்சனை யாற்றி

அன்னவன் அருளாற் பெற்றனன் இமையோர்

அவியெலாஞ் சுமந்திடு மாற்றல்

தமையன்மார் மூவர் சுமக்கலாற் றாது

தளர்வுறும் அவியெலாந் தானே

கைமயுறப் பொருக்கும் மதுகைபெற் றிமையோர்

குழாத்தினுட் கலந்தனன் கனலோன்

இமையவில் வாங்கிப் புரிசைமூன் றிருத்த

யெந்தைவன் னீசனை யண்மி

அமைவரும் அன்பால்வழி படப்பெற்றோர்

அருந்திறல் எய்திவீ டடைவார்.

Some of the salient features of this temple are...

The temple faces east with a 3-tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in the mukha mandapam. Stucco image of Shiva with Parvati as Rishabaroodar on the top of the artha mandapam. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma, and Durgai. There is no separate sannidhi for Ambal Mangalanayagi.

In praharam Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Nagars under Peepal tree, Naalvar, Chandikeswarar, and Navagrahas.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and artha mandapam. On the Vimana Stucco image, Nataraja is in place of Dakshinamurthy, and Kalinga Narthana is in place of Vishnu.
