ARCHITECTURE & HISTORY
The temple complex consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam, and a mukha mandapam on the south side entrance. It is believed that the original temple was built during the Pallava period and the same was re-built at a later stage. The Floors and walls are laid with modern tiles without leaving any trace of antiquity. The 18th Century Sivagnana Swamigal has sung this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchi Puranam.

LEGEND:
As per the sthala purana... The Vasuki one of the Ashta Nagas/snakes worshiped lord Shiva and got a boon of decorating on his body. Vasuki and Adisesha are the sons of Kathru. Arjuna married Ulubi daughter of Vasuki. Babruvahana killed Arjuna in a war. Vasuki gave his Rathna ( A precious stone )  to Ulubi, through which Arjuna became alive.

Devas and Asuras Churned the milk ocean to get the amrita,  using Manthira malai ( meru ) as mathu on Vishnu’s (Tortoise’s ) back and Vasuki ( the Nagarajan ) as rope. In the process of churning Vasuki spitted the Alakala poison, which was consumed and stopped at his throat by Lord Shiva before it mixed with Amrith. So Shiva has become Neelakanda. To get rid of sin caused by spitting the poison/alakala poison, Vasuki came to earth, created a pond, and established a Shiva Linga. Vasuki placed his Rathna on Lord Shiva’s head and worshiped. Vasuki was granted the boon of decorating Lord Shiva’s body.

Sivavakkiyar alias Kanikandan also worshiped Lord Shiva and attained mukti.

LEGENDS
As per hearsay... In the process of worshiping Lord Shiva with 108 flowers, it was short by 2 Flowers. Vasuki suspected Ambal. As per Lord Shiva’s instruction Ambal in the form of Kali tore her stomach and showed. This Kali temple is on the north side of the Shiva’s temple.
