Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram  Shiva Temples  Visit- 23

21st February 2020.

The visit to this Mandu Kanneeswara Koil at Pillayar Palayam was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. After Sri Chaunakeswarar Temple’s Visit, our next destination was to this temple.

The 18^th Century Sivagnana Swamigal  had written this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchipuranam. The same is reproduced as given below...

மன்னுமெய்க் கிளவிக் கரிமுகன் தென்பால்

மாண்டகன் னீசனை வழுத்திக்

கன்னியோர் பாகன் அருளினான் மாண்ட

கன்னிமா முனிவரன் என்பான்

மின்னிடைக் கடவுள் மடந்தையர் ஐவர்

வீங்கிள வனமுலை திளைத்துப்

பொன்னுல கிடத்தின் நுகர்பெரும் போகம்

புவிமிசை இருந்தவா நுகர்ந்தான்

Some of the salient features of this temple are...

The temple is facing east  and spreads in 10 Cents. A single tier mini Rajagopuram with 5 Stucco kalasas of which 2 are missing,  is in front. Lord Shiva’s Stucco image is in the Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Rishabam are immediately after the Rajagopuram. Moolavar in the sanctum is of Dhara Lingam with 16 flat surfaces, belongs to Pallava period. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

ARCHITECTURE

The Temple consist of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and artha mandapam. A single tier vesara Vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum. It is mentioned in the Thanjavur Palkalai kazhagam book on Koyir kalanchiyam, Chengai- MGR Mavatta Kanchipuram Temples, that the temple was built by the Pallavas and latter reconstructed during Vijayanagara period. Their emblem of Boar, Knife and Sun can be seen outside wall of the sanctum sanctorum.

LEGEND:

The Rishaba's head is facing north. There is an interesting story inscribed in the temple along with the sthala purana. The story goes like this. During Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasu’s visit, moolavar was not visible from out side. To their request, Lord Shiva asked Nandhi to move little to give Dharshan to them. So theRishabam turned it’s head towards north. This was mentioned in the second part of Periyapuranam written by Sekkizhar.

In another legend Maharishi Mandu Kanni created  a Bhoga Lok at Kanchipuram and lived  luxuriously with 5 Rambas ( Arambas ). He also created a Shiva Linga and worshiped. Indra, was ashamed of the act of Mandu Kanni Maharishi. The 5 Rambas created a Theertha kulam and worshiped Lord Shiva. Hence  the theertham was called as Arambayar Theertham and now this is called as Okkapiranthan Kulam.

TEMPLE TIMINGS:

Since oru kala pooja is conducted the closing and opening time is unpredictable.

HOW TO REACH:

The temple is about 1.3 KM from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 2.0 Km from Kanchipuram Railway station, 30.0 KM from Arakkonam and 70 KM from Chennai.

Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram and Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
