LEGEND:
It is believed that
the Name KaNIkaNdeeswarar ( கணிகண்டீஸ்வரர்
)
might have turned to the present name of
Kanikandeeswarar ( கனிகண்டீஸ்வரர் ). In Tamil, KaNi means Number, add, estimate, etc. KaNitham – கணிகன் – means Astrologer and KaNikam means one hundred Crore. This all means
that the lord Shiva knows everything. Another meaning for KaNikam, its worth
cannot be judged. Ie a Gem/Nagamani,
might have been placed on the Shiva Linga, Which is not there now.
