The visit to this Siddheshwar Temple, on Gandhi Road / Kanchipuram to Chengalpattu Road, on the banks of
Manjal neer Kaalvai, was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st
February 2020. After the Sri Kailasanathar Temple, our next destination was the
Shri Siddheshwar Temple.
The 18th-century Sivagnana Swamigal had written this temple’s sthala purana in
Kanchi Puranam. Lord Shiva was called “Manjaneer Koothar,” and the Manjaneer
Kaalvai was called Kambai Nadhi. The same is reproduced as given below...

Some of the salient
features of this temple are...
The temple faces east with a 2-tier Rajagopuram spread over a 50-cent land. Balipeedam and Rishabam are after the Rajagopuram.
Moolavar is a swayambhu, about 2 meters high and 2 meters in circumference boulder. Urchavars / Procession deities are Chandrasekar and Ambal. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu,
Brahma, and Durgai. In the paraharam
Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas, and Maha
Vishnu / Thirumal.
The temple consists
of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam, and Maha mandapam. A three-tier Nagara vimana with Karna kutas and
Salas. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhisthana.
HISTORY
As per the
Kanchi puranam, Lord Shiva was called “Manjaneer Koothar – மஞ்சணீர் கூத்தர்” or “Siddheesan – சித்தீசன்”, and the Manjal Neer Kaalvai was
called “Kambai Nadhi – கம்பை நதி”. The theertham was
called Siddha theertham. It is believed that the original temple was built during the Pallava period and later had Chola and Vijayanagara contributions.
LEGEND:
As per the legend, Ambal Umai Ammai, after applying turmeric paste, took a bath in the river to stop
the flood; the turmeric powder dissolved with water and flowed
like a yellow river. Hence, the river was called Manjal Nadhi (மஞ்சள் நதி), which is also
called Manjal Neer Kaalvai. Lord Shiva was also called “Manjal Neer
Koothar“. Many Siddhars worshiped Lord Shiva at this temple.
TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be
kept open from 08.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs, and from 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

TO REACH:
The temple is about 7
meters from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 2.2 km from Kanchipuram Railway Station, 30.0
km from Arakkonam, and 70 km from Chennai.
The nearest Railway
Station is Kanchipuram, and the Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
