The visit to this Shri
Soleeswarar Temple at Pillayar Palayam was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri
Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. After Anandha
Ruthreshwarar Koil‘s Visit, our next destination was this temple on Soleeswarar Temples Street in Pillayarpalayam.
Moolavar : Shri Soleeswarar
Some of the salient
features of this temple are.....
The temple is facing
east with an entrance arch. Shiva and Parvati's stucco image is on the entrance.
Moolavar Soleeswarar is of Dhara Lingam with 32 flat faces and is also called Samhara Bhairavar. Bas
reliefs of Ashta Bhairavas doing Pooja to Moolavar are on the back side wall of
Sanctum Sanctorum. In Koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma
and Durgai.
Ashta Bhairavas in this temple are in Shiva Linga form. They are Samhara Bhairava ( with Dog ), Asitanga Bhairava ( with Swan ), Viduvacha Vaneswarar - Chanda Bhairava ( with Peacock
), Ruru Bhairavar ( with bull), Krotha Bhairava ( with Eagle ), Unmatta
Bhairava ( with Horse ), Kapala Bhairava ( with elephant ) and Beeshana Bhairava ( with Lion ). These 8
Bhairavas are also called Ashtanga Bhairavas.
In Prakaram sannidhi
for Vinayagar, Sri Valli DevaSena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas, Suryan,
Two Nagars ( Kalinga Narthanar and Shiva Linga ) and Shaniswar. Another specialty of this temple is the
Saptakanni’s Panel and Jyeshta Devi with manthan and manthi.
HISTORY
AND ARCHITECTURE
The original temple belongs to the 8th to 9th Century Pallava period and may be reconstructed during
Chozha's and Vijayanagara periods. The North side wall is in damaged condition and
hence support structure was constructed. The sanctum sanctorum
consists of a sanctum, antarala, artha mandapam, and a maha mandapam.
LEGEND:
It is believed that Ashta Bhairavas worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. Devotees worship
Ashta Bhairavas on theipirai Ashtami day to get their wishes fulfilled.

The temple is about
3.0 KM from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 3.5 Km from Kanchipuram Railway station,
30.0 KM from Arakkonam, and 70 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway
Station is Kanchipuram and Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
