Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram  Shiva Temples  Visit- 11

The visit to this Sri Vashisteswarar Temple was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. This temple is on Santhaleeswarar Koil Street, about 50 meters off from Vegavathi River Road after Pachaiyappa's Women College. This is one of the Saptarishi Mandala temples, installed and worshiped by Sage Vashistar. 18^th Century Muni, Sri Sivagnana Swamigal has mentioned Sage Vashishta in his Kanchi Puranam.

Moolavar : Sri Vasishteswarar

Some of the salient features of this temple are...

The temple faces west in an area of 4 cents, on the south side of the Vyasa Santhaleeswarar Temple pond. The entrance arch is on the north side with a stucco image of Shiva and Parvati as Rishabaroodar. The temple was built like a Village temple. The Koshtas are protruding from our side. The Somaskandar panel is on the back of Moolavar. In Koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma, and Durgai. In the praharam, an Amman, Navagrahas, Bhairavar, and Chandikeswarar. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of artha mandapam. They look like Muneeswarar, with mustaches.

HISTORY.

The presence of the Somaskandar panel behind the Moolavar suggests that the original temple may belong to the Pallava period. During the 90s, it was recorded that the old temple was destroyed completely, and Lord Shiva was under a small shed.  Later, the temple was reconstructed by the local people, like village temples, in the 90s.  

As per the inscription tablet, first, Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 19th June 1946. 

LEGEND

It is believed that the Moolavar was installed and worshiped by Sage Vashistar.  Due to Munivar’s act/ Sakthi,  Shiva linga was blasted into pieces and later formed into its original form.

Lord Brahma, while explaining Lord Shiva’s fame to the seven sages (Aththiri, Kuchchar, Vashistar, Brigu, Kasipar, Gauthama, and Angira), asked them to establish Shiva Temples at Kanchi to attain mukti. So Vashistar installed this Shiva Linga and worshiped it.

The temple will be kept open from 08.00 hrs to 10.30 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

This temple is about 200 meters from Pachaiyappas Women's College on Santhalingeeshwarar Koil Street and about 500 meters from the Kanchipuram to Chengalpattu main road.          

The temple is about 3.0 km from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 4.5 km from Kanchipuram Railway Station, 38.0 km from Arakkonam, and 72 km from Chennai.

The nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram, and the railway junction is Arakkonam.
