The visit to this Sri Erukalangkavudaya
Kandan Sastha Temple at Erachakulam near Nagercoil was a part of the “Nanjil
Nadu Heritage Walk”, organized by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department and the தொண்டை மண்டல வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம் "திருக்கச்சி" from 16th to 18th
May 2025. I extend my sincere thanks to Mr. Velu
Pillai and Mrs. Radha Balan Ruth for organizing this Heritage Walk.
During our visit
to this temple, the temple was under palalayam. This temple is dedicated to Sastha; a similar temple is also there in Kerala. The temple can also be approached
through the west side of the Vellalar Community Marriage Hall.
Moolavar: Sri Erukalangkavudaya Kandan Sastha

salient features of this temple are…..
The temple faces
east. The stucco image of Sangili (Chain) Bhoothathan is on the left side of the
temple. Moolavar is of the Shiva Lingam. The mandapam has 6 pillars with the
images of the Donors and the Pavai Vilakku.
In the praharam, Sri
Madan Thamburan, Ayyappan with Nagars, and Horse, and elephant sculptures (North
Side).
ARCHITECTURE
The temple
consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and open mukha
mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on an adhistanam. The pilasters are Brahma
kantha pilasters. The prastaram is simple with valapi and kapotam. An eka tala
vesara vimanam is on the bhumi desam.

It is believed
the original temple is more than 1000 years old. The open mukha mandapam
was built in recent years.
The temple is
under the control of the Nagercoil Vellalar community.

This Erachakulam
village is next to Putheri on Nagercoil to Kulasekaram, and the temple is on State Highway 194.
The temple is
about 7 km from Nagercoil and 25 km from Kanyakumari.
