This temple is called Valiya Ejaman Thirukoil. Valiya means strongest. Who is that Valiya Ejaman?. Marthandappillai of Aralvaimozhi was called Valiya Ejaman. A brief history of Valiya Ejaman is as follows. Marthandappillai was born in Kollam, 903, to Sri Ravikurippu, a bodyguard to Sri Veeramarthandavarma Maharaja. Before his death, he asked the Maharaja to take care of his son. The Maharajah made all the arrangements to train Marthandapillai as a warrior and also made him his personal bodyguard.

The Vattakottai was built by him as per De Lannoy’s order. A Light sthamba was erected in Mavelikara in his name, for the victory of the Kayangulam war. He displayed his strength before th Mysore Mohamedian soldiers by extracting coconut milk with his bare hands. He used to lift weights, which had to be lifted by many people. He also erected two pillars of the Aralvamozhi Meenakshi Amman temple, lifting one side by an elephant and the other side by himself. He used to visit the Meenakshi temple daily. Seeing him, the villagers also followed him to the temple.

As per Suchindram Devasthana records, 20000 kottai paddy per annum was supplied to Marthandappillai and his 2000 soldiers as wages.

During Balaramavarma Maharajah's period, in Kollam 984, Marthandappillai fought with the Britishers, who attacked the Aralvaimozhi Fort. The fort was completely destroyed by the cannon. The British also destroyed the Punnangulam fort. During the war in Kollam 984, he was severely wounded and died at the age of 80. He was laid to rest at Punnangulam, and a temple was built by the Government with a statue and his sword.  

Marthandappillai used to consume 4 to 5 people's food. There is a kelvaraghu millet grinding stone (even 10 people cannot move it) found near his temple. It is said that he used to grind the millet for his use. His cot measures 9 feet in length and 4 feet in width. Since he was the strongest Chief of this army, known as Valiya Ejaman. Somebody claims that Valiya Ejaman died in the Ozhuginasery war. But how he was killed is not known.

The hand grinding stone was used to grind millets; it is believed that Valiya Ejaman used to grind millets for his use with this.

நல்லதொரு திவசத்திலே வானம் வெட்டி கல்லிறக்கி 

பட்டாளக்காரர்களும் பீரங்கிக்காரர்களும்

படையெடுத்து வந்தல்லவோ வாரதந்தவேளையிலே 

கோட்டைவாசலிலே உடையான்பிள்ளை வலியயசமான் 

வாளோடுகூடி டிரசுகள் தாம் போட்டு

வாசலிலே நிற்கும்போது வெள்ளைக்கார படைகள் வந்து 

அர்த்தவிளைப் போக்கதிலே கூடாரம் தானடித்து

துப்புகள் கேட்டல்லவோ கோட்டைபிடிக்க வேணுமென்று 

கோட்டைநடை வழியாக கோட்டை கடந்து வந்தல்லவோ

வருகிற சமயத்திலே உடையான்பிள்ளை வலியஜமான் 

படைகளைத்தான் தடுக்க அதிலொரு வெள்ளைக்காரன்

உடையான் பிள்ளையை வாளெடுத்து வெட்டிப்போட்டான்.
