Sri Krishnaswamy Temple / ஶ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணஸ்வாமி திருக்கோவில், Thovalai, Kanyakumari/Kanniyakumari District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Krishnaswamy Temple at Thovalai near Nagercoil was a part of the “Nanjil Nadu Heritage Walk”, organized by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department and the தொண்டை மண்டல வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம் "திருக்கச்சி" from 16^th to 18^th May 2025. I extend my sincere thanks to Mr. Velu Pillai and Mrs. Radha Balan Ruth for organizing this Heritage Walk.

This place was known as Thazhaikadu, also referred to as Chozhakulavallipuram, during the Chozha period. It was later renamed Veeramarthanda Chaturvedi Mangalam and is now known as Thovalai.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..

The temple faces east and is situated approximately 3 feet below road level. Dwarapalakas are at the open mandapam entrance. Moolavar Sri Krishnaswamy is in a standing posture. There are no images in the koshtams.

The stucco image of Neelakanda Sivan /Vilvamarathadi Sivan, and the Navagrahas are in the praharam.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and a mukha mandapam. The mukha mandapam pillars have images of Nayaka kings/ donors.  The sanctum sanctorum is on an upanam and pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam, and pattikai. The bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam kudam, lotus petals mandi, and pushpa pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam, with nasi kudus and madhalai.  The one tala vimanam above the prastaram was constructed with bricks. The sigaram is of the vesara style. Maha Vishnu, Dakshinamurthy, and Brahma are on the tala and greeva koshtams. 

The front mandapam pillars have the images of Ramar, Sita, Lakshmana, and Anjaneyar. 

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

This place was called Thazhaikadu alias Chozhakulavallipuram, and the same was changed to Veeramarthanda Chaturvedi Mangalam during (1532 CE) Venadu King Veeramarthandan Sankaranarayanan’s reign. 

The temple may have been in a brick structure during the Chozha period, and the same might have been reconstructed during the Venadu King’s period about 500 – 600 years ago. The temple sanctum sanctorum walls are supported with stone masonry till 2017-18. The same was pulled down, and a new temple was constructed, retaining the upanam.

Two 15th-century inscriptions connected to this temple were engraved on the boulder on the north side of the Kakkum Vinayagar temple.     

காக்கும் விநாயகர் கோயில், வடப்பக்கப் பாறை மேல் உள்ள கொல்லம் 670, பொயு 1494 ஆண்டு கல்வெட்டு தோவாளையில் எழுந்தருளியுள்ள நயினார், ஆதித்தவிண்ணகர் எம்பெருமானுக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்ட கொடையினைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.

The Kollam 670, 1494 CE inscription on the north side of the boulder of Kakkum Vinayagar Temple records the donations made to Thovalai Sri Athitha Vinnagar Emperuman. 

காக்கும் விநாயகர் கோயிலின் வடக்குப் பக்கமுள்ள பாறையில் உள்ள கொல்லம் 708, பொயு 1532 ஆம் ஆண்டு கல்வெட்டு, நாஞ்சிநாட்டு சுசீந்திரத்து கொதுகுலசபை அங்கத்தினரான ஆரியன் சொக்கன் என்பார் மன்னர் மாத்தாண்டன் சங்கரநாராயணனுக்கு நாஞ்சிநாட்டுத் தோவாளையில் எழுந்தருளியுள்ள நயினார் கோயில் சீபண்டாரக் கணக்கு எழுதியதைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது. தழைக்காடான சோழகுலவல்லிபுரத்தின் பெயரை மன்னன் பெயரால் வீரமாத்தாண்டச் சதுர்வேதிமங்கலம் என்று பெயர் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டதையும் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.

The Kollam 708, 1532 CE inscription on the north side of the boulder of Kakkum Vinayagar Temple records treasury accounts of the Nayinar Temple written by the kothukula Sabha member Ariyan Chokkan to the king Marthandan Sankaranarayanan. Also, the inscription records the change of name of the village from Thazhaikadu alias Chozhakulavallipuram to Veeramarthanda Chaturvedi Mangalam.

கிருஷ்ணசாமி கோயில், கருவறையின் தெற்குப் பக்கச் சுவரில் உள்ள கொல்லம் 708, பொயு 1532 கல்வெட்டு ஆரியன் சொக்கன் பெரிய பெருமாள் என்பவரைத் தோவாளையில் உள்ள கிருட்டி ணன் கோயிலுக்குச் சீபண்டாரக் கணக்காக நியமித்து, நாள் ஒன்றுக்கு இவ்வளவு ஊதியம் என்று அரசர் உத்திரவிட்டதைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.

The Kollam 708, 1532 CE inscription on the sanctum sanctorum south side wall/ upanam records the order of the King to appoint Ariyan Chokkan Periya Perumal as Treasury accountant and the salary per day.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Krishna Jayanthi, Rama Navami, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Anjaneyar Jayanthi, Karthigai month Rohini Deepam and Garuda Seva, Andal Ranga Mannar Thirukalyanam, Arudra darshan, Puratasi Saturdays, Margazhi Month, etc.

Annadhanam will be served for 50 persons daily around 11.30 hrs.

The temple will be kept open from 05.00 hrs to 09.00 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 20.15 hrs.

HOW TO REACH

The village Thovalai is on the State Highway from Aralvaimozhi to Nagercoil. The Krishnaswamy temple is about 100 meters from the foothills of Thovalai, Thirumalai Murugan Temple.

The village Thovalai is 8.00 km from Aralvaimozhi, 8.5 km from Nagercoil, and 22 km from Kanyakumari. 

The nearest Railway Station is Nagercoil.
