The visit to this Sri Karpaka Vinayagar
Temple at Veeravanallur, near Nagercoil, was a part of the “Nanjil Nadu Heritage
Walk”, organized by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department and the தொண்டை மண்டல வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம் "திருக்கச்சி" from 16th to 18th
May 2025. I extend my sincere thanks to Mr. Velu
Pillai and Mrs. Radha Balan Ruth for organizing this Heritage Walk.
This is one of
the Vinayagar temples exclusively built for Vinayagar as the presiding deity. Vinayagar
temple is on the banks of the Pazhayar Channel. In addition to the Vinayagar sannidhi,
a Shiva and Ambal sannidhi are on the right side of the Vinayagar sannidhi.

The temple faces
east, with entrances on the east and south sides. Gajalakshmi’s bas-relief
is on the lintel of the entrance. Moolavar Sri Vinayagar is in the sanctum
sanctorum. An elephant image is installed in front, and a Krishnar’s image is
installed on the left side of the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum.
In the praharam,
Vinayagar with Nagars and Chandikeswarar.
Apart from this, there are two mandapas with inscription tablets in the same village on the back
side of the bus stand.

This Shiva’s sannidhi
is on the north side of the Vinayagar sannidhi. A Rishabam is in front of Shiva
and Ambal sannidhis. Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing south. Ambal is in
a standing posture with two hands. The right hand is holding a lotus flower, and the left
hand is in dola hastam.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple
consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and a mukha mandapam.
The sanctum sanctorum is on an adhistanam. The pilasters are Brahma kantha
pilasters with vettu pothyal. A two-tala vesara vimanam is on the bhumi desam.
The temple was constructed with stone from adhistanam to prastaram.
The mandapa
pillars have the images of Donors/kings and Pavai Vilakku. The pillars also have
the bas reliefs of Shiva Linga, Snakes worshipping Shiva Linga, A cow
worshipping Shiva Linga, Vinayagar, carved lamps for lighting, etc.

There is an L-shaped tunnel with steps from the temple to the Pazhayar channel. This may be created for taking the water for abhishekam to the deities.

HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
This place was
called Veera Kerala Nallur during the Chozha period, and the same has been
corrupted to the present name of Veeravanallur.
This temple may
belong to the 14th to 15th Pandya period, and same was
reconstructed/expanded during the 17th to 18th centuries.
கற்பகவிநாயகர் கோயில், முகமண்டபத் தெற்குப் பக்கச் சுவரில் உள்ள சக ஆண்டு
1557, கொல்லம் 811, & பொயு 1635 ஆம் ஆண்டு கல்வெட்டு நாஞ்சி நாட்டு அனுமகேதன நல்லூர்க்குக்
கிழக்கே அமைந்துள்ள வீர கேரளநல்லூரில் வாழும் திருநெல்வேலிப் பெருமாள் என்னும்
என்றும் வென்று மாலையிட்ட பெருமாள் என்பார் கற்பக வினாயகர் நயினார்
திரு நெல்லைநாதர்க்கும், அம்மை அழகிய நாச்சியார்
அம்மைக்கும் நித்திய பூசைக்கும் மற்ற சிறப்பு வழிபாட்டுக்குமாக நிலம் கொடையாக
அளித்ததைப்பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The saka
1557, Kollam 811 & 1635 CE inscription on the mukha mandapa south wall
records the endowment of nithya pooja and celebration to Karpaka Vinayagar,
Nellainathar, and Ammai Azhagu ண்achiyar by the Tirunelveli Perumal alias Entrum Ventru Vazhum Tirunelveli Perumal. For the same land was gifted.
கற்பகவிநாயகர் கோயில், இரண்டாவது திருச்சுற்றில் வடக்கு பக்கத்
தரையில் கொல்லம் 834, பொயு 1658 ஆம் ஆண்டு கல்வெட்டு நாஞ்சிநாட்டு வீரவநல்லூரில்
எழுந்தருளியுள்ள கற்பக விநாயகப் பிள்ளையார்க்கு தினசரி வழிபாட்டிற்கும் சங்கராந்திக்கும்,
அமாவாசை அபிஷேகத்துக்குமாக திருநெல்வேலியில் வாழும்
வென்று மாலையிட்ட பெருமாள் என்பவர் அளித்த கொடையைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Kollam
834, 1658 CE inscription on the 2nd prahara north side floor (leads
to channel) records the endowment of daily poojas, Sankaranthi, Amavasya
abhishekam by Ventru Malaiyitta Perumal and his donations.

பராக்கிரமப்பாண்டிப் பெருமாளும், மடத்தில் சில நல்ல
காரியங்கள் நடத்துவதற்காக நிலம் அளித்ததைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.

& 1678 CE inscription on the Pillaiyar Madam outer wall records the gift of
land by Andichi’s daughter Ramachi and Kanakkar Thikkelam Pugazhum Perumal
Parakrama Pandyar to the Sivapandi Andar, who lives in the Mutt, to carry out good deeds.

LEGENDS
The temple
claims that the temple was constructed as per the Somasoothra and Sunlight
falls on the moolavar Vinayagar and Shiva, 3 days, in Uthrayana and
Dhakshinayana. For the same, a jala was installed on the compound wall opposite Shiva’s sannidhi.

CELEBRATIONS
Apart from
regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Vinayagar Chaturthi, Maha
Shivaratri, etc.

Since oru kala
pooja is conducted, the opening and closing times are unpredictable.
