The visit to this Sri Kakkum Vinayagar Temple
at Thovalai near Nagercoil was a part of the “Nanjil Nadu Heritage Walk”,
organized by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department and the தொண்டை மண்டல வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம் "திருக்கச்சி" from 16th to 18th
May 2025. I extend my sincere thanks to Mr. Velu
Pillai and Mrs. Radha Balan Ruth for organizing this Heritage Walk.
This is one of
the Vinayagar temples exclusively built for Vinayagar as the presiding deity.
The inscriptions are engraved on a boulder, which is a part of the Murugan temple
on the hill.

salient features of this temple are…..
The temple faces
east. Nagars, Boothathan, Sastha, and Dakshinamurthy are under the peepal tree. The stucco image of Vinayagar is on the top of the mukha mandapam. Moolavar Vinayagar is
in the sanctum sanctorum. The vahanas Moonjuru and Elephant are in front of the mukha mandapam.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple
consists of a sanctum sanctorum and a Mandapam. An eka tala vimanam is over the
sanctum sanctorum.

are on the mukha mandapam pillars in Anjali hastam.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
The temple
belongs to the 19th to 20th centuries. Maha Ashtabandhana
Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 17th June 2013. The following
inscriptions are connected to the Vishnu temple/ Sri Krishna Swamy Temple of the same village.
காக்கும் விநாயகர் கோயில், வடப்பக்கப் பாறை மேல் உள்ள கொல்லம் 670, பொயு 1494 ஆண்டு கல்வெட்டு தோவாளையில் எழுந்தருளியுள்ள நயினார், ஆதித்தவிண்ணகர் எம்பெருமானுக்கு
அளிக்கப்பட்ட கொடையினைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.

சொக்கன் என்பார் மன்னர் மாத்தாண்டன் சங்கரநாராயணனுக்கு நாஞ்சிநாட்டுத் தோவாளையில்
எழுந்தருளியுள்ள நயினார் கோயில் சீபண்டாரக் கணக்கு எழுதியதைக் குறிக்கிறது.
தழைக்காடான சோழகுலவல்லிபுரத்தின் பெயரை, மன்னன் பெயரால் வீரமாத்தாண்டச் சதுர்வேதிமங்கலம் என்று
பெயர் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டதையும் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Kollam 708, 1532 CE
inscription on the north side of the boulder of Kakkum Vinayagar Temple records the treasury accounts of the Nayinar Temple, written by the Kothukula Sabha member Ariyan Chokkan, to the king, Marthandan Sankaranarayanan. Additionally, the inscription documents the change of name of the village from Thazhaikadu, also known as Chozhakulavallipuram, to Veeramarthanda Chaturvedi Mangalam.

Thovalai is on the State Highway from Aralvaimozhi to Nagercoil. The Vinayagar temple
is on the foothills of the Thirumalai Murugan temple, Thovalai.

Kanyakumari.
