Delhi Gate, Arcot – Kanchipuram Road, Arcot, Ranipet District, Tamil Nadu.

The second visit to this Delhi Gate was part of the “Sadaranya Kshetram Visit” around Arcot on January 11, 2026, organized by Rameswaram Travel Agency.  The first visit details of this Delhi Gate were written as a combined post along with Delhi Gate, Saadatullah Khan Tomb / Pachaikal Mosque, Raja Desingu Cenotaph, Alambana Fort / Arcot Fort, and Abdullapuram Palace.

This was one of the gates of the Arcot fort, which once served as an entrance from the Palar River. Only a few traces of the fort wall exist now.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTION
After the death of Saadatullah Khan I, Arcot was ruled by 12 Nawabs of Carnatic and the Arcot Nawabs. Arcot's history changed a lot during the Nawab’s rule, with the constant threat from the British East India Company and the French to take control. The legal heir conflicts in the Arcot Nawab families also added fuel to this.

This served as Robert Clive's successful defense during the Siege of Arcot (1751CE) in the Second Carnatic War, a pivotal moment for the British East India Company, which led to a Victory. The Arcot fort was captured by Robert Clive between 23rd Sep to 14th November 1751 CE, and the same is inscribed on the side wall of the Gate. Hence, this gate was renamed as Delhi Gate to signify the beginning of the capture of Delhi. It is said that the top room was used by Robert Clive as his office. The fort was destroyed by Tippu Sultan in 1783 CE, and the remains of the brick walls can be seen.

This Delhi Gate is being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

ARCHITECTURE
