This visit to the Shri Mahamaaya Kalika
Devasthan, Maem, Goa, was a part of the Goa Heritage walk to the temples and
Heritage sites, organised by Aatrupadai, from 5th December 2025 to 7th December 2025. Thanks

special features of this temple are…
The temple faces
north with an entrance arch on the roadside. A mandapam, recently built, is in
front of the temple. A pada is between the newly built mandapam and the
temple. Guarding deities are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Mahamaaya
Kalika, in the sanctum sanctorum, is in a sitting posture on a tortoise.
A Deepa sthambh
and Tulsi mada are on the left side of the temple. A little further, some stones may be the original temple’s components installed under a tree. In that one
looks like a kanthu.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple
consists only of a sanctum sanctorum. With a small vimanam. Covering this sanctum
sanctorum, a mandapa and a mukha mandapa were built with a Mangalore tiled roof.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
Based on the
remains of the original temple, the temple may have been built during 11th
century Kadambas period. The mandapa covering the sanctum sanctorum might have
been built during the 16th to 17th century Maratha period.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, Ma Kali, after slaying the demons Madhu and Kaidapa, came to this place, sat calmly, and blessed the devotees.

CELEBRATIONS
Apart from
regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Navaratri, Vasant Puja, Akshay
Tritiya, Dasara, etc. days.

The temple will
be kept open from 06.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

This temple is located 10.3 km from the Shree Sapthakoteshwara Temple, 52 km from Goa Airport, 50 km from Vasco-da-Gama Railway Station, 75 km from Panaji, Goa, and 55 km from Madgoan Railway
Station.
