The
visit to this Shree Mangalnath Mandir, at Ujjain, in Madhya Pradesh, was a part
of “Magnificent Madhya Pradesh Yatra - Bhopal / Indore / Mandu / Maheswar /

This
Shree Maha Mangal temple, dedicated to Mangalnath in the form of Shiva
Lingam, is on the banks of the Kshipra River. This temple is on the Tropic of
Cancer and is believed to be the birthplace of planet Mars.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple faces east with an entrance arch. The Vinayagar sannidhi is in front of
the Mandapam. The Goat, the vahana of Mars in a standing posture, is in front of
the sanctum sanctorum. A Shiva Linga, with Nagarabaram, is in the sanctum
sanctorum. Ma Parvati and Vinayagar are on the back side wall of the sanctum
sanctorum.
Ma
Bhuvaneswari is in a separate sannidhi. It is believed that it will be
auspicious to circumambulate around the idol. A space is left for
circumambulation. A Shiva sannidhi is also in the praharam.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, the Maha mandapam and the ardha mandapam. The
temple was built in the North Indian style of stellate / star architecture. The vimana
is also in the sanctum sanctorum. A mandapam covering the mandapas and temple
with vimanam was built in cement and concrete in recent years.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
It
is believed that the original temple of Shree Mangalnath belongs to the period of
the 10th to the 14th century, the Paramara Dynasty period.
LEGENDS
The
temple is situated on the tropic of Cancer. This temple is of the 3rd Lord Shiva. As per the Matsya
Purana, this is the birthplace of planet Mars.
This place is offering a clear
view of the planet, hence it is preferred for astronomical studies, worshipped
on Tuesdays offering curd and cooked rice, but the Tuesday of "baishaka"
are especially auspicious.

AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted for Mangal dosh, Bhaat
Poojas, Nine Planet worship, Kalsarp dosh, etc.
In the northern part of India, Tuesdays are believed to be an auspicious day, since
Tuesdays are called “Mangalvar”. Hence, Tuesdays' special poojas are
conducted, and devotees offer prayers.
The
planet Mars is also called Mangal Graha. Devotees offer prayers to
Mangalnath of this temple before starting any functions/ events.
