The
visit to Shiva Temples with Ghats on the banks of the Narmada River, a River Boat ride at Maheswar, Bhopal, in Madhya Pradesh,
was a part of “Magnificent Madhya Pradesh Yatra - Bhopal / Indore / Mandu /
Maheswar / Ujjain”, from Nov 23 to Nov 29, 2025, organised by Mantra Yathra. Thanks
to Mr Balaji Davey and his team of Mantra
Yatra (website), for the excellent
arrangement and personal care.

The
Holy Narmada River is also known as “Shankari” as she was born out of a
teardrop of Shankar, the Shiva. Approximately 28 Ghats, Shiva Temples, and Chhatris
are on the banks of the Narmada River that can be seen from a distance during a boat
ride or from the top of Ahilya Fort. Of the 28 Ghats in Maheshwar, some of the
prominent ghats are Ahilya Ghat, Peshwa Ghat, Phanse Ghat & Mahila Ghat.
Pilgrims, after taking a dip in the Holy Narmada River, offer prayers at the
Shiva Temples similar to Kashi/ Varanasi. Hence, Maheshwar is considered a Mini
Varanasi.
