The
visit to this Shree Jai Maa Gadhkalika Mata Temple, at Ujjain, in Madhya
Pradesh, was a part of “Magnificent Madhya Pradesh Yatra - Bhopal / Indore /
Mandu / Maheswar / Ujjain”, from Nov 23 to Nov 29, 2025, organised by Mantra
Yathra. Thanks to Mr Balaji Davey and his team of Mantra

This Jai Mata Gadhkalaika Mata Sakti
temple is dedicated to Kali and is believed to be one of the Maha Sakti Peeth temples
where the upper lip of Devi Sati fell at this place.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple faces west with an entrance on the west and south. Mata’s vahana Simham
is after the west side entrance under a small mandapam. Mata Gadhkalika is in
the form of a smiling face with a protruding tongue.
In
the praharam/ premises, Deepa Sthamb, Shree Gaur Bhairav Temple (Ashta Maha
Bhairav Ujjain 7/8), Bhairav Parvat Shakti Peeth, and Shiva sannidhis.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple was constructed in typical north Indian architecture in a star formation
from adhistanam to sigaram. The vimana is with amalaka and kalas. The temple
consists of the sanctum sanctorum, the maha mandapam and an open ardha mandapam.
Some
unidentified reliefs are found on the compound wall.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
Shree
Gadkalika is traditionally known to be the choice of worship of the great lyric
poet Kalidas (The Writer of "Abhigyan Shakuntalam” & Chief Gem of the
court of king Vikramaditya) images and bricks and part of the plinth of first
century B.C.E. the shung period, fourth century CE. the Paramar period have
been, recovered from the basement of the temple, Emperor Harshvardhan got this
temple, renovated in the tenth century under Paramar rule, in twentieth century
the traditional priest Shree Siddhanath Maharaj got this temple renovated in
year 1944 CE.

LEGENDS
According
to the Shiva Purana, there is a story of Sati being carried from Daksha
Prajapati's sacrificial fire by Shiva, and her body parts falling at various
places in India. This place, where her upper lip fell, is hence considered a Shaktipeeth.
This
is the famous Kali temple where the renowned poet Kalidasa worshipped, received
divine blessings, and attained his scholarly skills.
