HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTION
The
temple was constructed in recent years. It is said that the Moolavar was taken
from the temple tank during the process of cleaning the tank. Initially, it was decided to
provide only a shed, but the present structure was built due to God’s grace,
with the funds mobilised through the trustees. Before Maha Kumbhabhishekam, it was decided to call Shiva Sri Karungaleeswarar, and an invitation was also printed, but it was changed to the present name in
relation to the name of the village (Pooiluppai) as Sri Ilupaipoovaneswarar, through an astrologer cum cowrie shells.
The Ambal temple was constructed with the funds donated by the K V Ganesh family from Madurai.
On 3rd September 2019, an inscription tablet installed outside the temple records the endowment of doing daily poojas by Siva A. Bakthavachalam till the sun and moon exist through the interest from the deposit of Rs 100000, made in Thiruporur Indian Bank. Also, he donated a Panchaloka Pradosha Murti’s image to this temple at Rs 40000.00.
LEGENDS
It
is said that any type of snake or poisonous creature bite will not harm
anybody in this village.
The
legend behind this goes like this… This place was once with Iluppai trees (Mahua
Trees), and the flowers were sent to Thirukalukundram Sri Vedhagiriswarar Temple.
One day, an Andhanar who came to collect the flower died due to a snake bite.
When the temple authorities came to know this, they prayedto Shiva. Shiva gave a
boon that, thereafter, no people will die due to the snake or poisonous
creatures within the boundary of the village. It is further said that there
were many instances of people bitten by the snakes who survived in this village.
