Maharishi Sandipani Ashram / महर्षि सांदीपनि आश्रम, उज्जैन / Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

The visit to this Maharishi Sandipani Ashram, at Ujjain, in Madhya Pradesh, was a part of “Magnificent Madhya Pradesh Yatra - Bhopal / Indore / Mandu / Maheswar / Ujjain”, from Nov 23 to Nov 29, 2025, organised by Mantra Yathra. Thanks to Mr Balaji Davey and his team of Mantra Yatra (website), for the excellent arrangement and personal care.

Maharshri Sandipani Ashram and Sri Sarveshwar Mahadeva Temple are in the same complex. Three idols of Krishna, Balram and Sudama are installed along with their Guru Sandipani. There is also a stone where numerals 1 to 100 are found engraved, and it is believed to have been done by Guru Sandipani himself. There are a lot of shrines, but obviously, the main shrine belongs to Guru Sandipani.

A Shiva temple, also called Sarveshwar Mahadev, houses a 6,000-year Shivlinga with Shesnaag in its natural form, and is believed to be worshipped by Guru Sandipani and his disciples. On the back wall of the samctum sanctorum, bas-reliefs of Shri Balaji, Shri Vamana, and Shri Narayan. Vinayagar, Krishna, Balram, Sudama and the Guru Sandipani are also in the sanctum sanctorum.

Around the Gomati Kund, a corridor has paintings of the life of Lord Krishna, Balrama and their friend Sudama in this ashram with their Guru Sandipani.

GOMTI KUND
Gomti Kund in Maharishi Ashram is a symbol of public devotion. According to the Puranas (Mythological Description), while taking education in the ashram of Maharishi Sandipani, Shri Krishna's attention was drawn towards the fact that every morning for some time, Maharishi Sandipani was nowhere to be seen in the ashram. When Shri Krishna came to know from Gurumata that Guruji used to go every morning to bathe in the river Gomti, because of this, there was a delay in imparting knowledge to Guruji. Shri Krishna invoked the water of the Gomti River to remove the difficulties faced by Guruji while coming and going during his bath. On his appeal, near the ashram of Maharishi Sandipani, the holy river Gomti appeared in the form of a pond, which became famous as Gomti Kund. Till today, Gomti Kund is present in Sandipani Ashram in a modified square form, even after a gap of several hundred years, which reminds us of the devotion of Lord Shri Krishna towards his Guru.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
SANDIPANI ASHRAM
According to the Puranic tradition, Krishna and his friend Sudama received regular instruction in the ashram of Kulaguru Sandipani. Besides the Mahabharata, the Puranas, Shrimad Bhagavata, Brahma, Agni and Brahmavaivarta bear references to the Sandipani ashram. Archaeological evidence of three thousand years old painted greywares has been recovered from this area. These bear a resemblance to the similar remains recovered at Hastinapur, Indraprastha, Mathura, Ahichchhatra and Kaushambi. This evidence shows that this region is the oldest in the city. Gomati Kunda is the old source of water supply to the ashram, and the same has been referred to in the Puranas. Also, the image of standing Nandi, near the tank, is worth seeing, and it belongs to the Shunga period. The area nearby is known as Ankapata. Popular tales describe that the place was used by Lord Krishna for washing his writing table at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Shri Vallabhacharya great saint of the Vaishnava sect, delivered his religious discourses in the vicinity of this ashram. The followers of the Vallabha sect count this place as the seventy-third seat of their acharya, who is said to have made eighty-four sittings for religious discourses throughout India
