HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Sree Mammiyur Devaswom was a part of Ponnani Taluk under the erstwhile Malabar District of Madras. During the invasion of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, forces looted and destroyed many temples, including Guruvayoor and Mammiyur Temples. Consequent to the defeat of Tippu Sultan in 1792 CE, the Zamorin Raja of Kozhikode had taken over the many Hindu temples, including the Temples in Guruvayoor. Sree Mammiyur Temple was brought under the trusteeship and control of the Eralpad Raja, the second Sthani Raja in the Zamorins' family. When the Madras HRE Board came into existence as per Madras HRE Act II of 1927, the Temple came under the supervisory control of the Madras HRE Board and transitionally under the Madras HR & CE Act 1951 and further under the HR & CE (Admn) Dept, Kozhikode since the formation of Kerala in 1956.

Due to improper maintenance, weather, lack of control, and administration, the Temple has become dilapidated.  A committee consisting of the prominent local devotees was constituted in the year 1960-61 for the development activities in the Temple. They undertook various development programs, completed the renovation work, and finally conducted a Naveekaranakalasam in 1996.

Later, the HR & CE (Admn) Department in the year 1991, appointed an Executive Officer, and the administration of the temple was brought under a Board of Trustees. The Athirudhra Mahayagnam was conducted in the temple directly by the Devaswom in 1997.

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (Administration) Department under the Government of Kerala was replaced and the Malabar Devaswom Board, Kozhikode, since 2nd October 2008. The temple is under the control of the Executive Officer of the Malabar Devaswom Board.

LEGENDS
It is believed that the pilgrimage to Guruvayur will be completed only after worshipping the Shiva of this temple.

As per the legend, Brahaspathi and Vayu are instructed to install Krishna by Uthavar. So both took a bath in the Rudra Theertham and worshipped Shiva, to advise them to identify the suitable place. Shiva showed the suitable place to install Sree Krishna and moved to the opposite side of the Rudra theertham. Since Guru and Vayu installed Sri Krishna, the place was called Guruvayur.

It is believed that this place is associated with the Mahima / fame of Shiva, known as Mahimaiyur. This has been corrupted as Mammiyoor.
