Shri Pushpagirieshwarar Swamy Temple / மலர்மலை ஈசன் ஸ்ரீ புஷ்பகிரிஸ்வரர் ஸ்வாமி திருக்கோவில், Poondi, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Shri Pushpagirieshwarar Temple was a part of Week 567, abhishekam arranged by Ancient Shiva Temples & Shivamayam, on 14^th September 2025. Thanks to Mr. Muralidharan S for including me in the abhishekam. This place, Poondi, was called Mummaraya Poondi during the Chozha period. The Shiva temple is on a small Kundru / Malai on the banks of the Kusasthalai River, which flows from south to north direction as Uttarvahini.

பொன் பூத்த திருருவுவிற் புகழ்பூத்த வெண் பொடியும்

மின்பூத்த செஞ்சடையின்மேற் பூர்த்தப் பிறைநீகுந்

தென்பூத்த நுதல்விழியுந் திகழ்கின்ற சிவமேபே

அற்பவுட லெடுத்தெடுத்ததே யழிந்தவையிங் களவிலையால்

சிற்பரனே சிறியேனென தீவினையெல்லாம் போக்கி

தற்பரனே புட்பகிரி சங்கர நின் கழலருளே

பொல்லாத வவித்தைவயம் புக்கியுன தடிபோற்ற

கல்லாத கடையேநான் கடையருடன் கலந்தவிந்தை

வெல்லாமற் துன்புற்றேன் வித்தகவென் மயல்நீக்கி 

நல்லாற்சேர் புட்பகிரி நாதாநின் கழலருளே.

ஓதியுன கடிகடொழு முத்தமரோ டுறவாகி

நீதிநெறிதவறாம னின்றறமும் பொருளின்ப

மாதிதொடர்ந் தந்தம்வரை யறியவறி வில்லேற்கு

சோதி மிகு புட்பகிரி சொக்காநின் கழலருளே

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..

The temple faces east with an entrance on the south side on a small kundru/ malai. A Rishabam is on the outside of the compound wall. Balipeedam and a small Rishabam are in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, and bas reliefs of Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the antarala. In the koshtam, Narthana Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma, and Durgai.

In the inner praharam, Ambal Maragathambigai, Natarajar with Sivakami and Navagrahas. In the outer praharam, Vinayagar with Nagar, Nagar, and Chandikeswarar.

Ambal Sri Maragathambigai is in a separate sannidhi. Ambal is standing in the three bhanga posture with abhaya varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam, and pattkai. Only adhistanam was built with stone. The bhitti and vimanam were built with brick and cement. The pilasters are of Brahma kantha pilasters. The Vimanam is of two tiers. No images found in the first tala. Shiva with Parvati, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the greeva koshtam. The Sigaram is of the vesara style with maha nasis on the 4 cardinal directions.

The sanctum sanctorum and antarala ceiling are of the Madras terrace with wooden beams.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

As per the temple Sthala puranam, this temple was built during Vijayanagara Nayaka King Thimmarayan in 1379 CE. The temple might have been reconstructed later, and the ardha mandapam, maha mandapam were added in the 20^th century.

The list of Trustees starts from Nagasamy Gurukkal in 1912. Last Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted from 18.04.1997 to 20.04.1997.

LEGENDS

It is believed that Sri Sundarar might have visited this temple on the way to Kanchipuram from Tiruvotriyur. A 20th-century Sri Oontreeswarar, Shiva temple is also there, about 200 meters from this temple, considered as a Paadal Petra Sthalam (The old temple is inside the Poondi reservoir. The old temple’s Shiva Lingam, Ambal, Rishabam, Vinayagar, and Murugan are in Gangadeeswarar Temple at Purasaiwalkam, Chennai). 

A hymn on Shiva of this temple is available, and the author is not known. A part of the hymn is given above, and the balance is given below.

லாலோங்குங் குருபரனே அத்தாநின் கழலருளே

காண்டிபனார் வில்லடியுங் கனசாக்கியர் கல்லடியும்

பாண்டியனார் பிரம்படியும் பட்டுபதந் தந்தவனே

வேண்டியுனையடையாத வெறியேனா னானாலும்

பூண்டிபதி புட்பகிரி பொருளேநின் கழலருளே

ஐயாநின் பாதம்வாழியம்மை திருத்தாள்வாழி

கையானை யடிவாழி கனவேலோன் கழல்வாழி

துய்யதிரு நந்தியுடன் சூழடியார் குலம்வாழி

வையமுடன் பாண்டிநகர் வளர்ந்தோங்கி வாழியவே

It is believed that Agasthiyar, Indran, Thimmarayan, etc., worshipped Shiva of this temple. Indra worshipped to get back his lost position.

As per the legend, during the celestial wedding of Shri Shiva with Parvati, all the Gods, Devas, Maharishis, and Sages gathered at Mount Kailash. Due to this, the north side of the Earth lowered, and the south side went up. To balance the earth, Lord Shiva asked Agasthiyar to go south. Agasthiyar, on the way to Podhigai Hill, established many Shiva Lingas and worshipped. It is believed that this Shiva Lingam of this temple is also one of them. Later, this place and the Shiva Linga were completely covered with the Avaram Poo plants (Tanner's Cassia or Avaram Senna).

During the Vijayanagara period, the King Thimmaraya heard the divine voice of Shiva when he passed this place. The king located a Shiva Linga worshiped with Avaram Poo. The Thimmaraya King constructed a temple in the same place. Shiva blessed the King with long life without diseases and ruled the country for many years. 

From the following song, it is believed that Indra worshiped the Shiva of this temple.

Since the Kusasthalai River flows from South to north as Utharavahini, this place is considered equivalent to Kasi.

HOW TO REACH

This place, Poondi, is on the bus route from Tiruvallur to Uthukottai, about 1 km away from the main road. The temple is 10 km from Tiruvallur, 11 km from Thirupachur, 28 km from Thiruvalangadu, and 40 km from Arakkonam Junction.

The nearest Railway Station is Tiruvallur.
