Sri Vaikunta Perumal Temple/ஸ்ரீ வைகுந்த பெருமாள் கோயில், R Kunnathur /ஆர் குண்ணத்தூர், Polur, Thiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this temple was a part of “Gajaprishta Vimana Temples Visit”, at R Kunnathur, near Polur, on 25th May 2025.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with Deepa Sthambam, Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Garudan. In addition to the above, a Hero Stone and a Thiruvazhi kal are also erected in front of the balipeedam. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar Sri Vaikunta Perumal is about 6 feet tall in a sitting posture. Sri Devi and Bhudevi are on both sides in a standing posture. Utsavars are in the ardha mandapam and in front of the Moolavar. Utsavars are unearthed during the recent renovation.




ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and Maha mandapam. The maha mandapam was built during the recent reconstruction with cement concrete. The temple was built like a mada temple with upanam and padabandha adhistanam. The adhitanam consists of jagathy, threepatta kumudam, and pattikai. The bhitti starts with vedikai. The two tala vimana were built with bricks, and the sigaram is of the vesara style. Maha Vishnu’s various avatars are in tala and greeva koshtams.

During the recent renovation, the original structure from upanam to Vedikai was retained. 





HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original structure belongs to the Chozha period (the temple authorities claim that the temple is 1300 years old), and later contributions are extended by the Vijayanagara Nayakas. 16th to 17th century Nayaka period inscriptions are found on the adhistanam.

It was said that the temple was dilapidated condition till 2008. Renovation was done, and Jeernodharana ashta bandhana maha samprokshanam was conducted on 04th June 2017, in the presence of Sriperumbudur, Srimath Appan Parakala Ramanuja Embar Jeeyar Swamigal and Thirukoilure  Srimath Emperumanar Jeeyar Swamigal.
The temple is maintained by a private trust.



LEGENDS
It is believed that worshipping Maha Vishnu in this temple it will be equivalent to worshipping at Vaikundam. It is further believed that Maha Vishnu grants Moksha to those who worship at this temple.

It is further believed devotees pray to Sri Vaikunda Perumal and Thayar Kamalavalli for santhana bhagyam / child boon and to remove marriage obstacles.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Vaikunta Ekadasi, Krishna Jayanthi, Hanuman Jayanthi, Annual Brahmotsavam, Saturdays, Margazhi month, etc.

TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to 10.30 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.
