HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The Thiruvambady temple was originally situated in a village 15 km away from Thrissur, and the main deity, Lord Krishna, was, some five centuries ago, brought to Thrissur.

The west nada with Gopuram foundation stone was laid on 22nd August 1984.

LEGENDS
Krishna… The idol of Krishna, now worshipped here, was originally the Parthasarathy idol in a temple at Edakkalathur, about 15 km from Thrissur. The temple was very much similar to this temple with sannidhis of Bhagavathy, Sastha, etc. About four hundred years ago, the villages moved to this place along with the Moola Vigrahas to escape communal violence. The Vigrahas are handed over to a Namboodiri couple at Kachanappilly Illam, 200 meters from the present Thiruvambady temple. The childless couple worshipped Parthasarathy as their own child; a small temple was constructed, and Parthasarathy was installed as “Unnikrishna”.

Bhagavathy…  The Kachanappally couple were ardent devotees of Kodungallur Devi, and the male used to go to Kodungallur Bhagavathi Amman and walk up and down. After some years, he couldn’t go and he felt very sad. Bhagavathi, with her Chaitanya, also followed him and came to his place. Consequently, it was enshrined on a granite pillar in the central courtyard within the Nalukettu. It is this consecrated pillar with the Devi 'Chaitanya' which is installed in the Sanctum to the left of Unnikrishna and worshipped as the compassionate Balabhadrakali (Kali as a child).

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

The Pooram festival was thought about and choreographed, more than 200 years ago, by the then ruler of Cochin State, Shri. Ramavarma, more popularly known as Sakthan Thampuran (1751-1805 CE). The Pooram festival is celebrated in April–May. The festival will be conducted during the day and night.
