The visit to this Sri Dhandayuthapani Temple
at R Kunnathur was a part of “Gajaprishta Vimana Temples Visit”, near Polur,
on 25th May 2025. This temple is a little way from the village on a
small hill with 50 + steps to climb up.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple is on a small kundru with a Vinayagar sannidhi at the base. Steps are
provided on two sides. Idumban’s stucco image at the end of the steps.
Balipeedam and Peacock vahana are in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Vinayagar and
Murugan are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar Sri Dhandayuthapani
is in a standing posture similar to Palani, holding a dhandam in the right hand, and the left hand is kadi hastam.
In
praharam Adhi Dhandayuthapani, Avvaiyar, and Idumban.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of the Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and maha
mandapam. Gajabrushta / Gajaprishta
style sanctum sanctorum. A 2-tier vesara vimanam is in the sanctum sanctorum.
Murugan’s various forms are on the tala and greeva koshtams.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
It
is said that the original temple is more than 500 years old. May be
reconstructed during the 19th- 20th Century.
