Brief History of the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Cathedral….

300 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் பழமை வாய்ந்த இப்பெருங்கோவிலின் வரலாறு.

கி.பி. 18116ல் பிரெஞ்ச் கப்பூச்சின் குருக்கள் புதுச்சேரிக்கு வந்தார்கள், ஆனால் அவர்கள் மிக குறுகிய காலமே இங்கு இருந்தார்கள். 1887இல் தாய்லாந்து நாட்டில் நடந்த புரட்சியின் காரணமாக சியாமிலருந்து வெளியேற்றப்பட்ட பிரெஞ்ச் இயேசு சபை குருக்கள் 1689இல் இங்கு வந்தார்கள். இன்றைய பேராயர் இல்லம் இருக்கும் இடத்தில் அவர்கள் ஒரு பெரிய தோட்டத்தை வாங்கினார்கள். அங்கு அவர்கள் 1691 – 92இல் முதல் கோவிலைக் கட்டினார்கள். 1693இல் டச்சு நாட்டினரின் படையெடுப்பால் இக்கோவில் இடிக்கப்பட்டது. 1687இல் தாய்லாந்து நாட்டில் நடத்த புரட்சியின் காரணமாக சியாமிலிருந்து வெளியேற்றப்பட்டு இங்கு வந்த பிரெஞ்ச் MEP குருக்கள் கருவூலம் (Procure) ஒன்றை அமைத்தார்கள் 1699இல் பிரெஞ்ச் இயேசு சபை குருக்கள் இரண்டாவது கோவிலை இங்கு கட்டினார்கள். அது உறுதியற்றதாக இருந்தது. எனவே 1728 முதல் 1736க்குள் தற்போதைய பேராலயம் இருக்கும் இடத்தில் அவர்கள் மூன்றாவது கோவிலை கட்டினர்கள். 1761இல் பிரிட்டிஷ்காரர்கள் புதுச்சேரியை கைப்பற்றியபோது இந்த மூன்றாவது கோவில் இடிக்கப்பட்டது.

1765இல் பிரெஞ்ச் இயேசு சபை குருக்கள் புதுச்சேரிக்கு திரும்பிவந்தபோது தற்போதைய மிஷன் அச்சகம் இருக்கும் இடத்தில் தற்காலிகமாக ஒரு கோவிலைக் கட்டினார்கள். இக்காலக்கட்டத்தில் 1761இல் பிரிட்டிஷ்காரர்களால் இடிக்கப்பட்ட மூன்றாவது கோவில் இருந்த இடத்தில் ஒரு பெரிய கோவில் (நான்காவது கோவில்) கட்டும் பணியை ஆரம்பித்தார்கள். இக்கோவில் பிரான்ஸ் நாட்டில் பாரிஸ் நகரில் இருக்கின்ற "Val-De-Grace' அமைப்பு வடிவில் கட்டப்பட்டது. இக்கோவில் ஸ்பானிஷ், பிரெஞ்ச் மற்றும் போர்த்துகீசிய நாடுகளின் கட்டிட கலைகள் கலந்து கட்டப்பட்டது. 

இவ்வாறு 1791இல் இப்பெருங்கோவில் கட்டி முடிக்கப்பட்டு புனித ஜென்மராகினி அன்னை பேராலயம் என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டு அன்றைய ஆயர் Msgr. Champenolas Nicholas அவர்களால் ஜீன் மாதம் 20ஆம் தேதி திருப்பொழிவு செய்யப்பட்டது. இந்த பேராலயம் பாண்டி- கடலூர் உயர்மறைமாவட்டத்திலுள்ள அனைத்து சுத்தோலிக்க ஆலையங்களுக்கும் தாய்பெருங்கோயிலாக விளங்குகின்றது. இந்த பேராலயத்தை சந்திக்க வருகின்ற பக்தர்களாகிய உங்கள் அனைவருக்கும் இப்பேராலயத்தின் பாதுகாவலி புனித ஜென்மராக்கினி அன்னையின் பரிந்துரையால், இறைவன் நிறைவான ஆசிர் வழங்குவாராக.

The French Capuchins arrived at Pondicherry in 1632 CE, but their stay here was very short. Then, in 1689 CE, the French Jesuit Priests, expelled from Siam, Thailand, due to a revolution in 1687 CE, came here. They bought a vast garden, where the present-day Archbishop's House at the Cathedral stands. In this place, the First Church was built by the French Jesuits from 1691 to 1692 CE. This church was destroyed by the Dutch invaders in 1693. The French MEP Fathers came to Pondicherry from Siam, Thailand, because of the revolution of 1687, and were having their Procure here. In 1699, the French Jesuits built the Second Church, but it was not a very strong one. So, in the years between 1728 to 1736 CE, they built the Third Church where the present Cathedral stands. In 1761, when the British captured Pondicherry, they destroyed this Third Church.

In 1765, the French Jesuits returned to Pondicherry and erected a temporary church in the place where the present Mission Press stands, and began the construction of a large church, the present Cathedral, on the same site of the Third Church, which was destroyed by the British in 1761. The Church was built under the model of the church called the "Val-de-Grâce”, in Paris, France. This Cathedral was named the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and was consecrated by Msgr. Champenois Nicholes, on 20th June 1791. This Cathedral is the Mother Church of all the churches of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. Its architectural style is a mixture of Spanish, French, and Portuguese. The Church is on the intersection of Mission Street and St Angel Road, on the back side of Bharathi Park, Puducherry, 600 meters from Puducherry beach, 1.2 km from Puducherry Railway Station, 3 km from Bus Stand, 30 km from Cuddalore, 41 km from Viluppuram, and 169 km from Chennai.
