The
visit to this “Police Museum” at Puducherry was a part of “Visit to Shiva,
Vishnu, & Jain temples, Christian Churches and Heritage Sites in and
around Pondicherry / Puducherry”, on 07th June 2025.
The
police museum was set up on 10th July 1992 to make the public aware of the
evolution of the police service from the French era to date. The small in-house
museum running in a dilapidated house saw its move to the police
headquarters on 30th June 2018.
It
is a one-room museum, comprising a wardrobe and three cabinets to showcase
the Puducherry police history. A few documents displayed here go back to an era
gone by and remind us of the evolution, struggle, and the present police
department.
The
wardrobe is full of uniforms and headgear called Kipes that the police
force has been wearing over the years. The cabinets are displayed with the
guns, rifles, and bayonets that were a part of the armed and police forces.
There
are even portraits and models of the Puducherry Police on various national
functions such as Independence Day, Republic Day, and Liberation Day. To
further add to the beauty, linger the flavours of the French regime exhibiting
380 pistols, .22 and .45 revolvers, 7.5mm and 9mm pistols, and cartridges.
