Mahabalipuram, a heritage Visit – Part -7

This 8th century rock cut cave is adjacent
to Arjuna’s Penance open rock cut monument. Krishna’s young life at Gokulam
lifting Govardhana mount to protect the
cowherds and Cowherdesses ( gopas and gopis) from the storm created by Indira.
Krishna is shown here by lifting Govardhan on his left hand and right hand in
varatha hastha. Close to him are the Gopis looking at him with astonishment.
Towards right Balarama keeping his hand on the shoulder of a Gopa. To his
right a scene of cowherd milking the
cow, the cow licking the calf. Close to this a Gopi holding the pile of milk
pots in a rope sling and balancing a bundle of fodder on her head next to her
is the wood cutter with his axe. Gopa, Gopis and their children were carved in
such a way they are ding a routine works. Every thing realistically depicts the
unconcern of the cowherds at furry of Indira. On the left are squatting loins,
man’s head lions ( griffins and sphinxes ). On the right on a elevated place a bull
watching Krishna’s leela calmly is excellent master
hand work of the sculptor.

மண்டபம் ( ஆநிரை காத்த கண்ணன் )
இந்திரனால் ஏற்படுத்தப்பட்ட சூறாவளியில்
இருந்து ஆயர்களையும் ஆய்ச்சிகளையும் கோவர்த்தன மலையை தன் இடது கையால் தூக்கி தாங்கி
அவர்களைப் பாதுகாப்பது மிகவும் அற்புதமாக செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. கோபியரும் கோபிகளும்
கவலை இன்றி இருப்பதை அவர்கள் இயல்பு வாழ்க்கையில் ஈடு பட்டு இருப்பதைப் போன்று வடித்திருப்பது மிக அருமை. அவற்றில் சில பெண்கள்
தங்கள் தோழிகளுடன் கண்ணனை ஆச்சரியத்தோடு காண்பது, பலராமன் அச்சத்தால் நடுங்கும் ஒரு ஆயரை அவரின் தோள் மீது கை வைத்து சமாதானப்படுத்துவது,
ஆயர்கள் பால் கறப்பது, பசு தன் குட்டியை நக்குவது, குழல் ஊதுபவர், மரம் வெட்டுபவர்
கோடாரியுடன், கோபியர்கள் தூளியில் தயிர், மோர் பானைகளை எடுத்துச் செல்லுதல், நடன மாந்தர்கள்,
பல தரப்பட்ட மிருகங்கள், மனித தலையுடன் கூடிய
மிருகங்கள் இப்படி பல. வடக்கு கோடியில் ஒரு உயரமான இடத்தில் காளை மாடு ஒன்று படுத்துக்கொண்டு
அமைதியாக இந்நிகழ்ச்சிகளை காணுவது மிக மிக அருமை. கண்ணனின் அசைவற்ற தன்மை இந்த சிற்ப்பங்களுக்கு
ஒரு உயிரோட்டத்தைக் கொடுக்கின்றது.
