This is a 7th century Pallava period first rock cut cave temple, ( before Mahabalipuram ) by the king Mahindravarman - I, dedicated to Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu on a 100 feet hill rock.
As per the inscriptions in grantham, this temple was constructed for Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu also called as Lakshithayathan with out using brick, metal, wood and mortar, ( which will decay due to aging.) and the Tamil version is... உலோகம், செங்கல், சுதை, மரம் ஆகியன இன்றி காலத்தால் அழியாத பொருள்களைக் கொண்டு விசித்திர சித்தனாகிய நான் மும்மூர்த்திகளுக்காக எடுப்பித்தது,,,
3 cells with 4 pillars and 8 pillasters. Pillars and capital are big in size with square and octagonal at the centre with out any ornamental carvings. It was told that moolavars were installed on pedestals made out of wood. The standing posture of the two dwarabakas or the door duardians are not identical.
It was also told that during Jain’s are on the peak, this mandpam was utilised for teaching of Sallekanai ( liberating soul without taking food) to the ladies.
