Sri Arthanareeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ அர்த்தநாரீஸ்வரர் கோயில், எழும்பூர் / எழுமூர் / Egmore, Tamil Nadu.

2nd July 2017.
Thought of visiting new temples on Sunday, the 2nd of July 2017. Also, so far I haven’t visited the  2nd Thevara vaipப்u sthalam of Chennai at Egmore (the other one is Thiruvetteeswarar Temple at Triplicane). Appar referred Lord Shiva to this temple in his 6th Thevara Thirumurai. This temple is on the banks of the Holy River Koovam. I was fortunate to attend Milk Abhishekam to Lord Shiva during my visit.

Moolavar    : Sri Arthanareeswarar
Consort      : Sri Tripurasundari

Some of the important features of this temple are...
The temple faces east without any Rajagopuram, entrance arch, or even Dwajasthambam. The temple is very small and has a sannidhi for Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal (Lakshmi is on the lap of Sri Narayanar), Ambal Tripurasundari, Bairavar, and Navagrahas.

Balipeedam and Nandhi are in front of the sanctum. In koshtam Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Siva Durgai. The Arthanareeswarar statue is behind the Shiva Lingam. Shiva lingam is a little large, 3 feet high and 3.5 feet wide. Avudayar is said to be older than the 7th century. The Cooum River runs as Uttar Vahini (flows in the North direction ).

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple had a lot of properties, and all were encroached and now stand squeezed between flats and residential buildings.

The Shiva lingam was unearthed about 200 years ago from a dry tank bed along with Ganesha, Lakshmi Narayana Perumal by Aravamudhu Naidu, and later built a Temple. It was said that this Lakshmi Narayana Perumal might have been previously at LNP (Lakshmi Narayana Perumal) Street, where Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple now exists. Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Sannadhi is on the right side of Lord Shiva.  At the sanctum entrance left side, Mahaganapathi and Senthilnathan are on the right side.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, Lord Shiva was worshiped by Saptha rishis- Brigu, Athri, Bharatwaj, Kashyapa, Viswamitra, Gautama, and Vashishta. Hence, this place was called Ezhor ur and was referred to by Appar as Ezhu mur and later turned to Ezhumbur (Egmore – British Period). (Ref: The Gods of Holy Koovam by Mrs Priya Baskaran). Hence, this temple is one of the Thevara vaippu sthalam.
