This Sri Sooriamman temple at Pammal has existed in the same place since ancient times; maybe even the temple tank was not excavated.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….

The Grama Devathai Sri Sooriamman is in a separate temple facing North in the Sri Arkeeswarar Temple Complex. Stucco images of Amman’s three forms are on the top of the entrance to the temple. Amman is in a sitting posture, abhaya varada hastam. The other hands are holding various weapons, like Trishul, kapala, etc. 

A Thirukulam / Sooriamman Koil Pond is in front of the temple. Trishul, balipeedam, and Simham are in front of the temple. Amman is in a sitting posture. Utsava murtis of the Shiva Temple is in the Ardha mandapam.

A row of Elephant vahanas is on the left side of the temple.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam. An eka tala Salakara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. 5 Kalasas are on the Vimanam.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

The original temple might have been reconstructed during the Vijayanagara Nayaks period. Vijayanagara Pillars with poo mottu pothyals are in Ardha mandapam.

The temple has been under the control of the HR & CE Department since 12.10.2020.

LEGENDS

This Sooriamman is a Grama Devathai, a village-guarding deity from diseases like Ammai, Kalra, etc, and enemies. Unlike other Ammans, Grama Devathai will always face the North direction, and This Sooriamman also facing the North direction is to be noted.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

Apart from Regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Fridays, Tuesdays, and Aadi Month annual celebration days.

The temple will be kept open between 07.30 hrs and 11.00 hrs and between 16.30 hrs and 20.30 hrs.

The temple is on the south side of the Sooriyamman Koil pond.

The temple is 2.4 km from Pallavaram Gate Bus stop, 8.3 km from Tambaram, 20 km from Koyambedu bus stand, and 24 km from Chennai Central station. 

The nearest Railway Station is Pallavaram.
