LEGENDS
As per one of the legends, Ma Parvati was doing a penance standing on one leg with a fire around her, on Shiva at Mangadu. Due to the Penance / thabas, this place experienced unbearable heat. So the Rishis requested Maha Vishnu to save them from the heat generated by Ambal’s thabas. Maha Vishnu, in turn, asked Mahalakshmi to take care of the Maharishis' request. Mahalakshmi took the form of a Cow and worshipped Shiva of this temple. Satisfied with Mahalakshmi’s prayer, Shiva and Ma Parvati united together once again. As a mark of this legend, Amba's pada was installed near the Rishabam. Further, to reduce the heat, it was told that Kanchi Maha Periyava installed a yanthara at the feet of Ambal.
