Sri Mallikeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ மல்லிகேஸ்வரர் கோயில், மாமல்லபுரம் / Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Mallikeswarar Temple at Mamallapuram, close to the Northeast corner of the UNESCO Heritage site, was a Part of “Mamallapuram Heritage Visit”, under the title – “Known Mamallapuram, Unknown places - தெரிந்த மாமல்லபுரம், தெரியாத இடங்கள்” organized by sastra & Chithiram Pesuthada Groups on 19th March 2023.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple faces east with an entrance on the east side. Balipeedam Kodimaram and Rishabam are after the entrance under the mandapam. Dwarapalakas are in front of sanctum sanctorum. In Koshtam, Vinayagar Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In Praharam, Vinayagar, Nalvar, Vinayagar, A Shiva Linga with Ambal, Valli Devasena Subramaniar and Navagrahas. Ambal Sri Mallikeswari is in a separate sannidhi facing south.


ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The Sanctum sanctorum is on a 3 anga adhisthanam. An Eka tala Vesara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the greeva koshtam.


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple authorities claim the temple belongs to the Chozha period and there are no inscriptions to prove the same. The present structure may be 200 to 300 years old.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Since is one of the living temples of Mamallapuraam, two kala poojas are conducted. Special poojas are conducted on   Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Sani Peyarchi, Panguni Uthiram Thirukalyanam, Aani Uthiram, etc.
Devotees pray to Ambal for marriages and Child boon.


TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept open between 06.30 hrs to 09.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is on the north end of Mamallapuram, Unesco Heritage site.
The temple is about 500 Meters from Mamallapuram Bus Stand, 15.6 KM from Thiruporur, 23 KM from Kelambakkam, 28 KM from Chengalpattu, 48 KM from Tambaram and 56 KM from Chennai Central.
Nearest Railway station is  Chengalpattu.
