Thiruveneeswarar Temple, திருமுடிவாக்கம் திருவேணீஸ்வரர் கோயில், Thirumudivakkam, ( Chennai metropolitan area ), Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The Thiruveneeswarar Temple, at Thirumudivakkam, in Kanchipuram District, was called Thurumudipakkam, and Shiva was called in the name of dense hair/Thurumudi, during the Chozha period, and the same has been corrupted to the present name of Thirumudivakkam. This place is close to the Kundrathur Murugan temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….

The temple faces east with an entrance arch on the back side, ie, west side. A well, balipeedam, and Rishabam are in front of the temple. Moolavar is on the raised-level sanctum and looks cute under Nagabaranam. There are no images in the koshtams except Durgai.

In praharam, Raja Ganapthy, an inscription tablet, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Navagraha Sannidhi, and Sri Devi Bhudevi samedha Sri Vaikunta Perumal.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam. The concrete mukha mandapam was built in recent years. The adhistanam is of simple pada bandha adhistanam on an upanam. The temple was constructed with stone up to adhistanam. Above pattikai to prastaram is constructed with bricks. There is no superstructure above prastaram.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

As per the inscription, this place was called Thurumudipakkam (a curled hair). This was under Jayangonda Chozha Mandalathu Puliyur Kottathu Kulothunga Chozhapuram, alias Kundrathur Nattu Thurumudipakkam.  

Rajarajan-II’s 6^th reign year (1152 CE), an inscription records the endowment of burning a sandhi lamp, by Thurumudipakka Kizhan Idarneeki Thiruchitrambalamudayan. For the same, 2 cows were gifted to the temple by Thurumudipakka Nayanar Vinnakaramudayar. Usually, A Vishnu temple is called Vinnagaram, and why this Shiva temple is called Vinnagar, perhaps it may mean the Sri Vaikunda Perumal Temple, which is in a separate sannidhi on the left side of the Shiva Temple.

குறிப்பு பொ.யு.12.ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு (சற்றொப்ப 1152 CE) இரண்டாம் இராஜராஜனின் ஆறாம் ஆட்சியாண்டுக் கல்வெட்டாக இருக்கலாம். இக்கல்வெட்டு துறுமுடிபாக்க கிழான் இடர்நீக்கி திருச்சிற்றம்பலமுடையான் என்பவர் துறுமுடிபாக்க நாயனார் விண்ணகரமுடையார் கோயிலுக்கு சந்தி விளக்கு எரிப்பதற்காக இரண்டு பசுக்களைத்தானமாக வழங்கி உள்ளார். இவ்வூர் ஜெயங்கண்ட சோழமண்டலத்து புலியூர் கோட்டத்து குலோத்துங்க சோழபுரமான குன்றத்தூர் நாட்டு துறுமுடிபாக்கம் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தது. 

இவ்வூரின் பெயர் துறுமுடிபாக்கம். துறு முடி என்பது அடர்ந்த தலை முடியைக் குறிக்கும், இப்பொருளின் அடிப்படையிலேயே இக்கோயிலின் இறைவன் பெயராகத் "திருவேணீஸ்வரர்" என்பதை வழங்குகிறார்கள். துறு முடி பற்றி  சங்க இலக்கியத்தில் உள்ள தகவல் இப்பதிவின் இறுதியில்...
