The
visit to this Sri Gokarniswaramudaiyar Temple at Ulagapuram was a part of “Visit to
Shiva, Vishnu, & Jain temples and Christian Churches in and around
Pondicherry / Puducherry”, on 07th June 2025.
Moolavar:
Sri Gokarniswaramudaiyar.
This
dilapidated Shiva temple is found in the same village on the east side of Sri
Kailayamudaiyar Temple. This temple faces west. The temple’s adhistanam, along with Jagathy and Muppattai Kumudan, still exists now.
A
Shivalingam and Rishabam are on the dilapidated temple adhistanam. The Shiva
Lingam is on a lotus pedestal, and the avudaiyar is square in shape. A damaged
Chandikeswarar idol is also found on the ground.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTION.
According
to the inscriptions of Rajendra Chozha-I and Rajamahendran (11th
century CE) recorded from Sri Devaraja Perumal Temple of the same village,
there were three temples, namely Sundarachozha Perumpalli, Gokarniswaramudaiyar, and Maha Sathanar, mentioned. No traces of Sundarachozha Perumpalli are found in
the village.
The
Thirubhuvana Chakravarthy Kulothunga Chozha’s inscription on the muppattai
kumudam records the name of Gokarniswaramudaiyar. Hence, it may be concluded
that this dilapidated temple is the Gokarniswaramudaiyar Temple.
