The
Visit to this Sri Sengazhini Amman Temple at Veerapuram near Thirukalukundram
was a part of the Heritage Visit to Veerapuram in Chengalpattu District on 16th
April 2023. In fact, Veerapuram Village
has a rich history of more than 1300 years since the Pallava period. Some of the
Heritage structures and temples in this Village include Koochileeswarar Temple / Sri Veera
Mangala Nathar Temple, Jyeshta Devi with Manthan / Kulikan and Manthi, Oyyalamman Temple, Solaivazhi Amman Temple (
a Saptamatrikas Temple ) and Sengazhani Amman Temple.

are….
The temple faces east. Sengazhani Amman’s
stucco image is on the top of the mukha mandapam. Sengazhani Amman in the
sanctum sanctorum is in a sitting posture. She is with 4 hands, holding Damaru,
Trishul, Sword, and bowl. A snake’s hood is above her head. A Head-alone image
is at the feet of Moolavar.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of a sanctum sanctorum, an ardha
mandapam, and a mukha mandapam. Amman’s various forms are in the niche / koshtams. A Two tier Salakara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple may have existed since the Pallava / Chozha period. The temple might have been called Sengazhuneer Amman Temple. This may have been corrupted to the present name of Sengazhani Amman.
Before the renovation of the temple, it was learned
that Moolavar was in stucco, the same was replaced with a Stone image during recent
renovations. The sanctum sanctorum entrance doors are gifted by Subbarayasamy,
Gengaia Naidu, Appa Naidu, and Velmuruga Achari on 15th September 1935 ( as per Tholliyal Nokkil Kanchipuram
mavattam by Sa Krishnamurthy ).
The doors are also replaced during the recent renovations by a new door and
the donors are Munuswamy Achari’s sons, M. Punniyakotti Achari, M. Ganesan
Achari, and M. Bharath Achari on 25th June 2014. ( It was told that the same persons donated the doors of the Shiva Temple and all other temples of Veerapuram Village ).
