Sri Kailasanathar Temple / ஶ்ரீ கைலாசநாதர் கோயில், தண்டலம்/ Thandalam, Chennai Metropoliton Area, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

This is one of the Shiva and Vishnu Temples built on the banks of the holy river Adyar, before it enters the Meenambakkam airport, at Thandalam in Chennai metropolitan area and Kanchipuram District. The temple is very near to Kovur.

Some of the salient features of this temple are……
The temple faces east with an entrance mini Rajagopuram on the south side. The Temple is about 3 feet below the road level. Stucco images of Shiva, Parvati, Vinayagar, Murugan, and Dwarapalakas are on the mini Rajagopuram.  Balipeedam and Rishabam are on the east side. Moolavar Shiva Lingam in the sanctum is on a round avudayar. No images are in the koshtam.

In praharam Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, in the same sanctum Vishwaksenar, Maha Vishnu with Sridevi and Bhudevi, Chandikeswarar and an abandoned Rishabam.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam, and mukha mandapam. The adhistanam is not Visible. Brahmakantha pilasters with Vettu pothiyal ate on the Bhitti. From Adhisthanam to prastaram constructed with stone. An eka tala Nagara Vomanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. There are no images in the Greeva koshtam also. Bhuta gana faces are shown on the thoranas above the koshtams.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple may be 200 to 300 years old and there are inscriptions found to prove its antiquity.

The last Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 04th May 2001 with the blessings of Kanchi Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal and Sri Vijayendra Saraswati Swamigal and in presence of Mambalam West Om Murugashrama Sri Sankarantha Swamigal.

 


POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular ore kala poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri days, and New Year days.

The temple will be kept open between 07.00 hrs to 10.30 Hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

The temple at Thandalam is about 1 KM from Kovur, 3.8 KM from Mangadu, 4 KM from Kundrathur, 7 KM from Porur, 13 KM from Guindy, 14 KM from Koyambedu and 22 KM from Chennai Central.
Nearest Railway station is Guindy.
