The
Visit to this Sri Madhagu Kaththamman Temple at Mahendradi Lake bund was a part
of the Tiruvallur Heritage walks organized by
Celebrate Kanchi, under the leadership of Mr. Vels Kumaran. About 16 Shiva and
Vishnu temples built during Pallava and Chozha Periods, are covered in this 2-day Heritage walk on 22nd & 23rd April 2023. Even though visiting this Amman Temple was
not on the list, had our midday meals at this temple and had the darshan of
Madhgukaththamman.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are...
This
temple faces North, on the banks of
Mahendravadi Lake also called “Mahendra Tataka” excavated by the
Pallava King Mahendravarman-I. The steps are constructed from the East side to
reach the temple. Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar and Nagaththamman
are on the Ground level.
In
sanctum Sanctorum Saptamatrikas are installed. Stucco Dwarapalakis are at the
entrance of the sanctum sanctorum and Maha mandapam.
In
praharam stucco images of Madhaku Kaththamman, Vinayagar, Gajalakshmi,
Saraswati, Mahakali, Parameswari, Vaishnavi, Mahenthiri, Rajarajeswari,
Parasakthi, Ganga, Kamakshi, Sri Muthalamman, Chamundi, Brahmi, Varahi,
Vaishnavi, and Kaumari.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The sanctum
sanctorum is on an upanam, pada bandha
adhistanam. Since stucco images of koshtas are big, installed in front of the
koshtam. A single tier salakara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
It
is believed that this Saptamatrikas temple facing north existed since the Pallava
period. The Saptamatrikas worship started in the Pallava period in Tamil Nadu
and as per the iconography, the Saptamatrikas idol belongs to the Pallava period, though
the present structure may have been built during recent years.
LEGENDS
It
is believed this Amman saved many Villages and lives due to the breach of the
Mahendravadi Lake, hence She is called Madhagu Kaththa Amman.

Apart
from regular poojas special poojas are
conducted during Aadi Month, Sundays, Amavasya days, and Devotees sponsored days.
A Dosha nivarthi sthalam for Marriages, Puthra dosha, Rahu & Ketu dosha,
Sani dosha, Kala Sarba dosha, Kaalathira
dosha, Guru dosha, etc,.
TEMPLE TIMINGS
The
temple will be kept open between 07.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to
20.30 hrs. On Sundays, the temple will be kept open throughout the day.

HOW TO REACH
This
temple is on the North side of the Mahendravdai lake bund, overflow and sluice
gate side. And on mid-way between
Banavaram to Nemili main road.
This
temple is about 3 KM from Mahendravadi Monolithic Rock Cut Cave Temple, 20 KM
from Kaveripakkam, 27 KM from Thakkolam, and 28 KM from Arakkonam Junction.
The nearest railway Junction is Arakkonam.
