Hero Stone / Nadukal / Veerakallu / செங்கம் நடுகற்கள் at Mothakkal, Thiruvannamalai / Tiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.

LOCATION: Lat 12 4’ 43.55” and longitude: 78 44’ 25.79”

These two Nadukals or Hero stones belong to the Chengam Nadukarkal group, in a village called Mothakkal in Thiruvannamalai region. The Hero stone place is called Aatrangkarai Vediyappan temple, standing in a field completely filled with oil and butter. Thiruman is also applied to the Nadukals considering they belong to Vaishnavam. The inscriptions are not legible. There are stucco/ sudhai statues of Vediappan shooting a tiger with an arrow and a Horse rider ( Hero ) have been installed in recent years. Regular poojas are conducted apart from annual pooja during Tamil Adi month.

The first Nadukal on the left is a hero stone, whose head is turned on the left side. The hero holds a bow and dagger / Katar. The holy article Kendi is shown. The arrow holder is shown on his left hip. As per the inscription this hero stone was erected during the 7^th Century, Mahendra Varman –I’s 32^nd year rule for  Akkanthaikkodan, who died in the process of recovering cattle from the thieves.

இந்த மோதக்கல் கிராமத்தில் உள்ள நடுகற்கள் திருவண்ணாமலை பகுதியைச் சார்ந்த "செங்கம் நடுகற்கள்" தொகுதியைச் சார்ந்தது. இது ஆற்றங்கரை வேடியப்பன் கோவில் என அழைக்கப்படுகின்றது. இங்கு கல்வெட்டுக்களுடன் கூடிய ஒரு வீரக்கல்லும் ஒரு புலிக்குத்திக் கல்லும் உள்ளது. இவர்களை வைனவ மதத்தைச் சார்ந்தவர்களாகக் கருதி வெண்ணை மற்றும் நாமம் சாற்றி உள்ளனர். கல்வெட்டுக்கள் படிக்க முடியாத அளவிற்கு எண்ணை பூசப்பட்டு உள்ளது. சமீப காலத்திய குதிரைமீது அமர்ந்து புலி ஒன்றை அம்பால் கொல்லும் காட்சியும் குதிரை, நாய் முதலியன சுதை வடிவில் முன்புறம் உள்ளது. தின பூசையைத் தவிர்த்து, வருடாந்திர கொண்டாட்டங்கள் ஆடி மாதம் நடைபெறுகின்றது.  ஆடு, கோழி போன்றவைகள் வேடியப்பனுக்கு படைக்கப்படுகின்றது.

முதலாவது உள்ளது வீரக்கல். வீரனது தலை இடப்புறமாகத் திரும்பி கைகளில் குறுவாளும், வில்லும் காட்டப்பட்டு உள்ளது. அம்புத்தூணி வீரனின் இடுப்பிலும், மங்கலச் சின்னமான கெண்டியும் காட்டப்பட்டு உள்ளது.  கல் வெட்டின் படி இந்த வீரக்கல் கிபி ஏழாம் நூற்றாண்டு பல்லவ மன்னன் முதலாம் மகேந்திர வர்மனின் 32ம் ஆட்சி ஆண்டில் எடுக்கப்பட்டது. இந்த வீரக்கல் பொன்மோதனாரின் சேவகன் அக்கந்தைக்கோடன் ஆநிரைக்களை மீட்கும் போது  அடைந்த வீர மரணத்திற்ககாக எடுக்கப்பட்டது.

கோவிசைய ம…..ந்திரபரும(ற்கு மு)ப்பத்திரண்டாவது….யை தொறுக்கொண்ட ஞான்று பொன்மோதான்னார் சேவகன் அக்கந்தைகோடன் தொறு விடுவித்துப் பட்டான் கல்.

Pulikuthi Nadukal.

The Second Nadukal is the Pulikuthi Nadukal.  It is rare to see a Pulikuthi hero stone, where there is no dense forest. In this hero is shown fighting with a Tiger. His left hand is shown in the tiger’s mouth and holds a dagger / Katar in his right hand. This Pulikuthi Nadukal was erected during the 7^th century,  Pallaava King Mahendra Varman-I’s, 32nd-year rule for a soldier called Vinranvadukan, who worked under a small king Ponmothanar. The Hero died in the process of killing a tiger, most probably to save the cattle or people.

இரண்டாவது நடுகல் ஒரு புலிக்குத்தி வீரக்கல் ஆகும். அடர்ந்த காடுகள் இல்லாத பகுதியில் கிடைக்கும் ஒரு அரிதான புலிக்குத்தி நடுகல். வீரனின் இடது கை புலியின் வாயிலும் வலது கையில் குறு வாளும் காட்டப்பட்டு உள்ளது. கல்வெட்டின் படி இந்த புலிக்குத்திக்கல் கிபி ஏழாம் நூற்றாண்டு பல்லவ மன்னன் முதலாம் மகேந்திர வர்மனின் 32வது ஆட்சியாண்டில் எடுக்கப்பட்டதாகும். பொன்மோதனாரின் சேவகனான வின்றண்வடுகன் புலியுடன் போரிட்டு அடைந்த வீர மரணத்திற்காக எடுக்கப்பட்டது.

LOCATION: Lat:12 7’ 50.32” and Longi: 78 54’ 24.92”

This Vediyappan temple is on the banks of river Pennai in a Village called Eduthanur in the Chengam Nadaukarkal group of Tiruvannamalai region. People used to call this hero Stone Uumai Vediappan. The Hero stone is in half-buried condition, only above the hip is visible. Terracotta / baked clay horses are offered to this Vediappan. The hero stone is applied with turmeric powder. Tridents are also erected along with small terracotta horses.

The hero is in a standing position with his head turned to the left. Bow and dagger / Katar are shown in hands. On his left, a dog is shown. In addition to this, the holy articles like Kendy and Simizh are also shown. Thorana is shown above the image.  Two Inscriptions are inscribed above the hero and the dog. From the inscriptions, this was erected during the 7^th century, Pallava King Mahendravarman–I, 34th-year rule, for Pana king’s son-in-law Potrekkaiyaar's young son Karunthevakathi, who died in the process of recovering buffaloes from the thieves. Along with him, his dog is also shown on his right.

ஆநிரைகளைக் கவர்ந்து சென்றவர்களிடம் இருந்து அவற்றை மீட்கும் போது இறந்துபட்ட வீரனுக்கு எடுக்கப்பட்ட நடுகல் எடுத்தனூர் எனும் கிராமத்தில் வேடியப்பன் அல்லது ஊமை வேடியப்பன் எனும் தெய்வமாக வழிபடப்படுகின்றது. அவ்வீரனுடன் இறந்த நாய்க்கும் கல்வெட்டுடன் செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. நன்றிக்கடனாக,  வழிபடும் மக்களால் அளிக்கப்பட்ட சுடுமண் குதிரைகள் சூழ வேடியப்பன் நடுகல் பாதி மண்ணில் புதைந்த நிலையில் காணப்படுகின்றார்.

வீரனின் இடதுபுறம் தலை திரும்பி உள்ள நிலையில் கைகளில் வில்லும் குறுவாளும் ஏந்திய நிலையில் காட்டப்பட்டு உள்ளது.  மங்களச் சின்னங்களான சிமிழும் கெண்டியும் கீழே காட்டப்பட்டு உள்ளது. வலது காலின் அருகே ஒரு நாயும் உள்ளது. இரு தோரணத்திற்கும் மேலே வீரனுக்கும் நாய்க்கும் தனி தனியாக கல்வெட்டுக்கள் வெட்டப்பட்டு உள்ளன.

இந்த நடுகல் கிபி ஏழாம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சார்ந்த பல்லவ மன்னன் முதலாம் மஹேந்திர வர்மனின்  34ம் ஆட்சி ஆண்டில் நடப்பட்டது. கல்வெட்டு வாசகத்தின் படி இந்த நடுகல் பாண அரசருடைய மருமக்கள் பொற்றெக்கையாரின் இளமகன் கருந்தேவக்கத்தி எருமைகளை கவர்ந்த கள்ளர்களிடம் இருந்து மீட்கும் போது இறந்து பட்டவனுக்காக எடுக்கப்பட்டது. அவனுடைய  கோவிவன் எனும் நாய் இருகள்ளர்களைக் கடித்துக் காத்தும் நிற்கின்றது.

The hero stones found around the Villages near Chengam, a big place near Thiruvannamalai, are grouped as Chengam Nadukarkal/Hero Stones. These Hero stones, including the animals, are erected as a monument for the deceased. There are hero stones for Cock, Bullock, Dog, etc,. Hero stones are the continuation of Menhirs erected in remembrance of those deceased. As per ASI record (70 – 80s record) there were about 317 hero stones of which 214 were erected for those deceased during the recovery of Cattle from the thieves/enemies. North Arcot, South Arcot, Dharmapuri, and Salem have the maximum number of hero stones in Tamil Nadu.

The Hero stones are from the Sangam ages and a few years before three hero stones were discovered and shifted to Thanjavur Museum. Hero stones are largely available from the Pallava and Vijayanagara periods. During their period local administration has the power of erecting hero stones, mentioning the King’s name. But Chozha period hero stones are very rare since powers are not vested with the local administration in Thondai Nadu. (only a few Hero Stons are available in the Chozha region).

Most of the Chengam Hero stones are under worship, usually called by different names like Sannasiyappan, Vedar, Kirishnarappaa, Vediyappan, Umai Vediappan, Irattai Vediappar, Nirai meettar Kal, Saavu mettu Vediyappar, Nathamettu Vediyappan. Also locals mentions as Minaarappan kal, moothaan kal, pattaan kal, Vethiyappan. It is to be observed that, even now, it is a practice that the people name their children Vediappan. Apart from daily worship, the villagers used to celebrate annual functions during Aadi month ( Tamil Month ). They used to offer Goats, Cocks, pigs, etc,.

  

The hero stones are erected either near the burial sites or a little away from the Village. The salient features of the hero stones are, that the hero will be in standing posture. The head will be turned to the left. ( The reason for this was to show the holdings positions of weapons for a right handier and it will be opposite to the left handier ). The dress below the hip will be shown. The holy articles like Mirror with Handle, Kendy, and Simizh are also shown. Weapons like bow, shield, Knife, dagger / Katar, and Sword will be shown in hands. In some hero stones, arrows are also shown on the chest or head, from this, we may presume that the hero might have died due to the hitting of the arrow. SE. GUDALUR.

LOCATION: Lat: 12 8’ 24.14” and Longi: 78 59’ 48.30”

The hero stone is on the bank of a tank near the cremation ground. This hero stone is broken into two pieces. The hero is in a standing posture holding a bow in his left and a dagger/ Katar in his right hand. The holy articles like kendi and simizh are shown. Thorana is also shown above the bow. This Nadukal or the hero stone was erected during the 7^th century Pallava King Mahendravarman-I’s, 38th-year rule. The inscription on the top of the stone was erected for Ponnarambanar kollaka sevak ( soldier ) by the name of Kaakandi Annaakan died in the process of recovering the cattle from Paana King's son-in-law Kantha vinnanaar of  Gudal village.

கல்லில் வீரனது உருவம் இடப்புறம் பார்த்த நிலையில்   இடது கையில் வில்லும் வலது கையில் குறுவாளும் ஏந்திய நிலையில் செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இடது காலுக்குக் கீழே மங்களச் சின்னங்களான கெண்டியும் சிமிழும் உள்ளது. வில்லுக்கு மேலே தோரணமும் காட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. இவ்வீரக்கல் ஏழாம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சார்ந்த பல்லவ மன்னன் முதலாம் மகேந்திர வர்மனின் 38ம் ஆட்சி ஆண்டில் நடப்பட்டதாகும்.  பாண அரசருடைய மருமக்களான கந்த விண்ணனார் கூடலில் ஆநிரை கவர்ந்தபோது பொன்னரம்பனார் கொல்லகச் சேவகன் காகண்டி அண்ணாவன் என்பான் அவ்வாநிரைகளை மீட்டு வீர மரணம் அடைந்ததைக் கல்வெட்டின் மூலம் அறிய முடிகின்றது. இந்த நடு கல்லை கூடலைச் சேர்ந்த இளமக்கள் நட்டுவித்தனர் என்றும் அறிய முடிகின்றது.

Anthropomorphic Figures / Sculptures / Mother Goddess worship - Thai Deiva Vazhipadu / தாய் தெய்வ வழிபாடு , Mottur, Thiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.

In India, especially in Tamil Nadu, ladies are treated as mothers, and it was believed that they would bring wealth to the family in the olden days. Ladies are seen as the Mother Goddess Shakti. A lady/ Girl who died before marriage is worshipped as a Virgin goddess. It was believed that these virgin goddesses would save the family members throughout their lives. From the evidence found from the Stone Age, structures like Dolmens/ kuththu kal, Cairn Circles with cist, and the materials found in the Cist, ladies are treated like mother goddesses. Later, they are worshipped as Kotravai. Navakanda statues are found near Kotravai, believed that men are sacrificed to these goddesses.

The above Nattar Goddess ( கிராம தனி தெய்வங்கள் ) are replaced by Saptha  kanniyar or Saptha mathas ( சப்த மாதர் ) during Vedic period via, Brahmi, Maheswari, Kowmari, Vaishnavi, Vaarahi, Indrani and Samundi. These female goddesses alternate with the male gods,  Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu, Subramaniyar, and Indiran. Later, these female goddesses are combined into to single Goddess Amman. Kotravai also changed to Durgai. A separate powerful Goddess has turned to the koshta Goddess due to the influence of the Vedic.

During the Stone Age, in memory of the deceased woman, monuments were erected in the form of Menhir/Kuthu Kal, and in some cases, statues of women in standing posture were erected near the Dolmens or near the cist. The photo given below shows one such menhir/kuththu kal at Mottur, a village on the banks of the river Pennai in the Thiruvannamalai district, erected near a Cist. It was said that similar Menhirs / Kuthu kal (குத்துக் கல்) are found in Andhra Pradesh, which look like women with all parts (head, breast, etc). This area was a burial ground during the Stone Age. Most of the Cairn Circles available in the area are found in disturbed conditions. This kuthu kal is also called visiri Kal (விசிறி கல்). As per the experts, this might be more than 2500 years old.  Once a year, during the Tamil Month Aadi, local people sacrifice a goat, a pig, and cock to this Kuthukal.

But as per Historians, these are the anthropomorphic figures erected along with cairn circles.
